BEATING BY DOUGLAS Erskine Pitches Islanders To Second Victory Over Juneau Nine Claude Erskine pitched one of the best games of the season last night, helding the Moose down tc one hit and ending the. seven in- ning battle, 3 to 1. Beth the Moose ana the Islanders were at their best, Mooseman John- son allewing only four hits from his arm. But it was. the pitching of Erskine and the fielding ol Niemi that won the ball game foi the Islanders, making it two down for the Moose and both of the beat- ings administered by the Island team Two In First Up agzainst Johnson's close pitch- ing, Roller came up to bat for Deuglas and struck out. Manning after several attempted bunts, got to the bag on Freddy Schmitz's error; Erskine struck out, and home run Rustad lifted one over the fence, his third of the season. The Moose failed to get a solid hit from Erskine, and Lawson, Blake and Fred Schmitz were sent back to the dugout after grounding out But the next frame showed one hit and one run each for the teams, with Martin takinz the first and only base hit from Erskine. Snow was brcught home from has base on balls when Martin dou- bled, tho score board showed onc run for the Moosemen, and the pos- rible whitewash was averted. Doug- las, however, fared no better, with Andrews making the only run of the » with his homer. Bell al- nost scored when he came up after the over-the-fence ball, getting to first on a walk, stealing a base, but was left on third when Eddie Roller struck out, making three away. One More Hit The next five innings were mark- ed by clese ball playing on the part of both teams, and by superb | fielding by Niemi. made in the Jensen took a single from John- son, but the Island left fielder failed to make it score because of Mooseman Jchnson's close pitching on the next three at bat. Then in the| fiftih - Tfame Niemi fldshed to life again in fast double play by catch- ing Sharek’s fly and throwing to Big Andy on first where Andrews caught Martin off base. stubby center fielder through. It was in the last inning thal he caught two flies,-one after the other, and left it up to Erskine to strike out Werner and end the ball game.
