Pressure was high from the Aleutians nerthward and nort eastw: to the Interior of Alaska. There were light showers over most of British Columbia, southerly portion of Yukon Territo and along the stal area from Washington westward to Dutch Ha: - bor. CAMERA! ACTION! If you ever come to Hollywood and are fortunate enough fo have an entree to the studios, find out if Gregory Ratoff is direct- ing a picture. There is never a dull moment on a Gregory Rat off set. This week, the excitable Russian is shooting a jailhouse scene for “Public Deb No. 1.” George Murphy, a waiter, has been put into the hoosegow after giving a spanking to Society Girl Brenda Joyce for express- ing parlor pink views in a restauant. He is being flooded by tele- grams of praise from all over the country Hobart Cavanaugh, a fellow prisoner. is reading one of the messages to him. ‘“*Congraulations’,” he reads. “*Your hand has struck a mighty blow against the forces that are uhdermining America.’ “You know,” adds Cavanaugh, “life is very ironic. You put in jail for spanking a woman and you become a nation; hero. I am put in jail for the same thing. I spanked a woman, too—only it was my wife. “If more people knew my wife, I would be a national hero.” His expression is so comically wistful as he reads the lines that he breaks Ratoff up. Ratoff hardly can keep from laughing out loud. “Hobie,” he enthuses after the scene is finished, “when God gave you that face, he put a million dollars in your pockets!” Cavanaugh looks at Ratofff, still wistfully. “Mr. Ratoff,” he says, “you make me laugh, too.” Tt is even funnier, they tell you, when Mischa Auer is work- ing in a scene. Mischa is playing a Russian butler who is trying to convert Brenda Joyce to Communism. He is continually burst- ing out into torrents of Slavic words. Both Auer and Ratoff speak the language because they are real Russians. The other day, when Mischa was rehearsing one of his out- bursts, Ratoff suddenly interrupted. “All right, Mischa,” he shouted, “It's enough, please! Lel’s mat (;\v.,r: reception - AT charming hostessess give thoug™*ful guests who bring gifts of deliclous Van Duyn Candies. Little sttent (ans"m:\)::s{?- ;ry ol ',ercy’ eust come %a” @” Y P exclusively CHOCOLATES VAN DUYN CHOCOLATE SHOPS shoot it now before you get any better and even I won't be able to understand you!” Out at Universal, Director Eddie Sutherland is shooting ene for “The Boys from Syracuse,” Broadway musical that bor- rowed the plot of Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors.” Alan Jones, Irene Hervey and Rosemary Lane, clad in classic garb, are eating at a table. Joe Penner and Martha Raye are serving them. Joe has just been rebuked for not using proper respect in ad- dressing his superiors. Martha jabs him in the ribs. “Remmeber,” she hisses, “big mouths get little people into a lot of grief.” “Well,” Penner hisses back, “YOU ought to know.” Studio caution about dialogue is proverbial -in serious dram- atic scenes as well as in comedy. In “Strange Cargo,” M-G-M even deleted part of “The Song of Solomon.” There are eight feminine roles in R-K-D's “Have It Your Own Way"—a perfect setup for professional jealousy on the set. But Maureen O'Hara apparentiy doen't feel any. I try to talk to her about her role and she tells me how good Lucille Ball is going to be. “She’s got some swell songs.” says Maureen. “Wait until you hear ‘Mama, What'll T Do Now?' " : “Do you sing, too?"” I asked. She laughs and shakes her head. “I'll sing for you in about a year,” she says. “I have some studying to do first.” " by Lodema Johnson. -WORDS sing of Mother, famflidr tunes.
