Gable and Loy in “Parnell” should have exhausted the ticket-takers—instead of the scanty audiences it did attract. Claudette Colbert as “Zaza” should have done as well as Claud- ette (with Gable) in “It Hapuened One Night.” A star without a good vehicle is soon hitch-hiking on the career road. a good story without benefit of stars often can make the grade. It isn't easy, and it takes time, but it “The Grapes of Wrath,” no case in point, had the benefit of the novel's popularity. “Gone With the Wind” had this, plus Gable’s established star draw. But “A Man to Remember” nothing—except good story, exceptional performances, good diree- tion. “The Informer,” drawing at first only the Victor McLaglen fans, was rejected widely, but came back strongly when word got around that here was a picture of power and beauty and strength in every department—beginning, of course, with its powerful story. And then, stories and stars minus competent direction can boz down, and a picture with all three factors rated excellent can suffer from inadequate “production.” A good movie is the porduct of so many hands and minds that to assign credit to any one factor is unfair. And yet, I believe that in the great majority of instances a good, sound story is the first essential ingredient.
