But 1 feel safe in saying of today’s talented ones that, even if perhaps they are not such outstanding personalities, the best of them are surely not inferior to the great of yesterday. It is unfortunate, however, that the storms of Europe haye now swept a few such gifled players as Ida Roland, in many of her roles unsurpassable; Paula Wessely of Austria, and several great German actresses now wasting away ‘on the unsubstantial spiritual diet of the Nazi Reich. Deplorable, too, is the loss to the world of the talented act- resses of the small countries such as Hungary, and Poland—these have never had the opportunity to present themselves to the audiences of any great European or American metropolis.
