Cne wishes that the moguls of the stage, screen and radio would recognize it as a new and powetful ‘ally of the entertainment business. My only criticism of the set-up is that whereas England has the doubtful benefit of television's being a government monopoly America looks like linking it irretrievably with the sponsor sys- tem of adveitising. Both are handicaps in my humble opinion. Television should, one day, be good enough to get the public to pay direct--as it does in theatres or picture houses. You can be clocked up with the amount you use television as you are locked up with the way you use your telephone. Your sets should be free, exeept for an installation charge and a minimum rate per month—a very small minimum, But the productions should be s0 good that people will pay a cent, five cents or ten cents according to the scope and interest of the program. There are millions of people who would pay ten cents for a two-hour program made up of, say: Charlie McCarthy, or Jack Benny, Helen Hayes in o special version of “Victoria Reégina” (with Miss Hayes in persen), and a portion of the most exciting local fight, or a horse race or some sporting vent. A two-hour show for téen cents in your home when you can't get to the picture show! If the reply is that people will not pay because they have been educated to get radio free, my reply is that people will pay anything to see a show they want. It is up to the producer to put on such a good show that people will want it.
