All she did was pose for publicity | pictures. And the reason? The studio had a girl from France ‘: named Simone Simon, who got there first and was already working. Osa Massen, although not at all like Simone Simon in | personality, and much prettier, was considered too reminiscent of the other girl. Osa didn't work until Simone left town, and | until she went to another studio. You saw her in “Honeymoon in Bali,” and youll be seeing more of her—even :I Simone returns. | Robert Cummings doesn’t even look like Lew Ayres. There | is, however, some similarity in “type” between them. Cummings { spent a term at Paramount, getting his hopes set on certain roles, only to have it happen time after time: Lew got them. The biggest role he had there (he discovered later) was his only because Ayes didn't want it. Cummings had to make a fresh { start at Universal (Ayres had moved to Metro) before he got places. run, Only one thing, actually, is making Linda Darnell’s rapid rise possible. That ie the fact that, some months ago, Loretta Young wearied of staying at one studio and decided to pu,k her pictures THat /\t}': reception charming hostessess give thoughtful. guests who bring gifts of delicious Van Duyn Candles. Little | attentions make you & "must come" guest. Try ius VAN DUYN CHOCOLATE mon‘ Perey’s exclusively as she liked them, Along came Linda, who is the “Loretta Young type,” to step into her roles, both of which have been ‘Young-ish. Had Loretta stayed, Linda would have been waiting yet. You sing, and think that might make a difference! Consider Allan Jones. Jones has a fine voice, and is a better actor than Nelson Eddy can ever hope to be, but that didn’t keep Jones from being muffled (and practically hidden too) by Metro which held the contracts of both. Nelson, like Simone, was there first, and the Eddy-MacDonald team was established in fan favor. Jones had his chance once, in “The Firefly,” and made good at it, but he was immediately squelched again. He had to break loose and go to Paramount, where “The Great Victor Herbert” ought to make Metro feel pretty sad. . Dennis Morgan, another $ine singer, had a double personality obstacle to fight. Also a Metro man, he had not only Eddy but also Jones to hurdle before he could be heard—but he wasn’t, until he went to Warner Bros. He's one of those up (there must be thousands of them) for “The Desert Song,” in which he can unloose all the warbling he had to bottle up at Metro, And consider the aspirants to the throne of the great Temple, Shirley. At least a dozen blue-eyed, curly-haired types have made a bid for a place there, and not one has remotely touched her. Well, are you still headed this way? But don't uy you were'nt e — {Alaska Music Supply Arthur M. Uggen, Manager Pianos—Musical Instruments and Supplies Phone 206 122 W.
