HOLLYWOOD, Cal., Dec. 18.—If there’s a better example of “showmanship” before the cameras right now than the teaming of Jane Withers and Gene Autry, I haven't seen it. Tt would be pleasant to report that the inspiration came to Producer Sol Wurtzel via a dream, and it would be more exciting if a seer had snatched it for him from tea leaves or a crystal ball. The prosaie truth is that Sol was thinking of this and that when someone suggested that Autry, free and eager to make a picture apart from his Republic contract, would be a good bet for Withers. And Sol, who is always looking for ideas for pictures didn’t miss the boat on this one. They're a good pair: Autry, tops among the western stars, and Jane, one of the ten tops among all stars although her chances for a repea tthis year—because of a couple of palookas—are not so good. The youngsters love both of them, the western fans know no age limits, papa and mamma go with the youngsters. You see? This is bashful Gene's first trip away from his modest home lot, Republic. His leading lady is Marjorie Weaver. who plays Jane’s big sister beloved by Gene. What Marjorie didn't know, when she and Gene and Jane went to the still gallery, was that Gene had been kissed in a picture only once in his career—by Ann Rutherford, who was 16 at the time and doing leading ladies. Somebody told Marjorie, and she stepped up and plunked Gene a good one on the lips. Gene blushed, and thought it over NOW AT That's the reception cherming hostessess give thoughtful guests who bring gifts of delicious Van Duyn Candles. Little attentions make you & ::::; come" guest. Just before the still session was finished, he strode over and, with deliberate aim, returned the compliment. Proving nothing except that even a cowboy star can get used to big city—or big lot—ways fast. Director of the picture, “Shooting High,” is Al Green. He's the fella—one of the fellas—who said Jane wasnt’ the type when she applied for extra work in “As the Earth Turns” five years ago. Speaking of showmanship—there’'s nothing wrong with the Mae West-W, C. Fields teaming in “My Little Chickadee" either. Both being expert show-people, they can be relied on to stage at least one good temperamental bout before the cameras finish with them. There would be more of these “ideal” teamings if contractual limitations permited. Cagney and Raft, wo tough hombres, were together in a picture almost as soon as Raft was free from his old Paramount contract. With Fred Astaire on their list, the Metro folks couldn't wait to get him and Eleanor Powell together. Sometimes “perfect teaming” misses cut only by a shade of time, Jane Withers was practically set for a venture with Mickey Rooney—practically except that Metro bagged Rooney into the Hardy Family before the contracts weer brought out. And sometimes the really perfect teaming just can't be dreamed about. There were a couple of kids teamed once in a picture called “Bright Eyes.” To put them together again—Jane Withers and Shirley Temple—would constitute A-1 showmanship. But that would be acking too much of the very human natures of their respective camps. | 2 ‘ THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, MONDAY, DEC. 18, 1939.
