Dance Miss Maydelle Georg Mr. and Mrs daughter THE STORY SO FAR: San- ta has a doll, Leezen, specially made by the fairies so that she can talk after midnight. She was made for the King of Westphalia, but Eric, the son of Lightning, hae told Santa he wants Leezen. Chapter Six Running Away T was mid morning next day when Eric, the son of Light- ning, was heard again, piping a tune. Santa put down his hammer and watched him dance right into the Toyshop. | The fairies were so surpriscd: they all fluttered up into the| air. Gnomes came ruming and the dolls sat up on the shelvi and rubbed their eyes. But one doll never looked at| him at all, That was Leezen, the doll that was as big as a lady, | the one that had been made for| the King of Westphalia. She stood | with her eyes closed at the foot of | the Christmas tree. Eric danced right over to her and finished his tune on a few little notes running right up the scale. He stopped playing, bowed very low, and then laughed across the room at Santa. “What — who — where?” whi pered the toys around Santa’s feet. | “That, my children, is the son of Lightning,” said Santa to the Toyshop. | “0-0-0," said everyone, and they all fell back a little from the visitor as though they felt shy. The Most Difficult Thing “And what, Sire, is the most difficult thing to do here?” asked Eric laughing boldly. _“Well,” said Santa scratching his head, “the gnomes are mak- | ing an electric train today. It's| finished but it won’t go.” “Where?” said Eric. Six little gnomes pointed without a word lo the back of the Toyshop. “Oh,” | said Eric. He walked around the | train looking. Then he laughed and beckoned Santa. “Look,” he said. “The switch isn’t thrown. But then it is dark here, and hard to see in this corner.” The six gnomes chuckled., One | little fellow pushed over the) | he said, “Come, let me help make 'THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, SATURDAY, DEC. 9, 1939. Then the next one.” The gnomes shout- ed, “Certainly, we'll make this one in half the time.” So the six gnomes and Eric settled down to hammering out little trains, fitting wheels on to them, and painting them bright red. Eric made a specially fine whistle that blew a tune. But he kept glancing at the doll, Leezen, and finally he got up and went to | sit at her feet. “Dear, dear,” he said, “this would be the nicest playmate of all if only she were awake. So there he sat all day playing sad | Jittle tunes on his flute. At dinner he scarcely although Mrs. Santa coaxed . Time For Bed After dinner Santa tried to in- terest him in whittling little ite, whistles. But Eric rose and start- ed a slow dance around the Christmas tree. When the big clock in the corner struck ten Santa put down his i stretched and said, everyone.” Dolls scurried to their cradles. Fairies folded their wings abaut them and went to sleep on branches of the Christmas tree. Gnomes went to their cave out- side. And Santa snuffed out all the candles and went to bed. Eric was left sitting alone at Leezen’s feet. . | Now Santa planned to wake again at midnight to take Leezen to the kingdom of Westphalia so | he asked the moon to wake him. But when he woke Leezen was gone. This is what happéned. When the big: clock began to strike twelve Eric began to play another, sad little tune and as he did, he walked slowly back- ward toward the door,, watching Leezen. Her eyes fluttered open, she heard Eric’s song, she smiled and then she followed him slowly. He opened the door and stepped out into the snow. Leezen fol- lowed.
