St. Once before in his movie carcer Bob Montgomery has been was during the making of “Night Must Fall,” his best picture, really enthusiastic about a picture he was in. The other time the one that won him nomination for academy award. That was the story Montgomery begged and pleaded to make, There have been at least four others, since then, on which he hounded the Metro front office to no avail. “The Earl of Chicago,” now in production, is the fifth, It is as “different” from the typical Montgomery light comedy as was “Night Must Fall.” Like that picture, it is a psychological portrait, macabre in spots, but with saving touches of comedy which the former film lacked No dealer in allegories, Bob seemed unconscious of his drip- ping face as he remarked, bepween takes: “You've got to sweat, in this business, to good.” He was referring to the work put in on “The Earl of Chi- N E W S cago” before and during production. Dldest Bank in Alaska Commercial Savings Safe Deposit Banking by Mail Department The B. Vi. Behrends Bank Juneau, Alaska producer, director, actor nor writer feels the other fellow is trying to take over his particular job. We're all willing to listen to the other fellow's point of view, and that makes for real team-work. “There's nothing that can insure the success of a picture, but this way we can all have fun trying for it.” . Bob feels that “The Barl of Chicago” is a gamble for him, just as was “Night Must Fall” The first turned out rather hap- pily, finaneially as' well ad artistieally, doing 60 per cent better in England than any other preévious Montgomery film and holding its own'in America. “If this one should flop,” he said grinning, “T'll go to the doghouse, a residence with which I have become fairly familiar, It might take ten years for me to come out of it. if at all. If you fail in this business, it’'s for good. But I think it's worth the camble, Tt’s an interesting story, a sound one, and it's different.” And it’s only coincidence that bob Bob’s pet movies see their heroes safely to the gallows, if you were thinking (as I was) that being hanged is a Montgomery ouséssion, “No,” he said, “some of my pet stories—that I still hope to do are comedies. The main thing is that theyre good stories. Unless you start with one, you haven't much chance of a good picture.” And truer words were never spoken. FOR INSURANCE See H. B.
