Try an Empire a® Hollywood Sighs And Sounds By Robbin Coons. Maybe it's just poetic justice. Maybe the Messrs. Towne and Baker planned it that way.‘ But from the outside looking in, the production of “Swiss Pf\.mlly Robinson” looks as wacky as some of the deeds of the former writets who turned producers. Towne and Baker, or Gene and Graham, used to be the silly-willies of the local writing gentry. Shrewd fellows, even in their silliest hours, but definitely off base when it came to attention-getting tricks. Being slightly loco in their disregard for such conventionalities as soft speech or shirt- -wearing during literarily productive moments, they have reaped harvest in cash as well as in “notices” such as this. HOLLYWOOD, Cal, Nov 17 a But let’s get on that set, and scrutinize the workings of poetic justice in collaboration with the Messrs. T. and B.: In the first place, it's terrific, colossal and gigantic. In the second, it's incredible. In the third, it's a jungle. The good Robinson tribe, duly shipwrecked and now floating on their salvaged raft with household goods and animals, have just arrived in Jungletown. They have found the river (which is here on the sound stage) and they are about to do some exploring. There are Papa R. (Thomas Mitchell) and Mamma R. (Edna Best) and the youngsters, including Tim Holt, Terry Kilburn, Freddie Bartholomew, and a baby Quillan of the numer- ous acting family of Quillans. In this fantastic jungle, with vines and trees and papfér- mache rocks #nd stfange tremiendous flowers (ie., like dinner- plate morning glories) there are also creatures. Creatures on the wing—and on the leg, and branch, and water. Birds, i""”‘ & é ECOME! /rh_fi(o\!v: reception charming hostessess glve thoughtful guests who bring gifts of deliclous Van Duyn Candies. Little attentions make you & NOW AT :‘::;:‘ come" guest. Try it} Percy’s 7jfl " @uyfl exclusively VAN DUYN emgi’::crilm The Robinsons have steered their raft after their ducks and geese which found the stream flowing into the ocean. The ducks and geese, having done tHeir duty as guides into the interior are still present. They don't seem to know what to do with themselves, except swim about like crackpots in search of Utopia, honking and quacking. This is a scene wherein Papa R. is asking the boys to thank heaven for their safety after great perils. The boys and Papa R. stand on the “river's” edge, and papa leads them in prayer. To enliven the static river's flow, men in trunks stand out of camera rangé and swish the water with wooden agitators. Another man in trunks gets in and under the water to shoo (or cue) the ducas and geese. Twe latter wish neither to be shooed nor eued. They honk in protest and flap their wings. The whole aspect is Rube Goldbergish. Papa R. prays, and the birds cry honk, honk, honk—gquack- quack. Papa R. tried again, and the birds splash and dive—~flutter ,and honk. The director, Edward Ludwig, is getting a little bit flustered. Papa R. tries again, ahd again, but all that heaven or the mike can hear is the honking and quacking of the birds. I don't know how it came out Prayer probably conquered all, in the end. But I suspect the next Towne-Baker picture won't have any birds, | AR, Ferryway and Willoughby Ave. —_— | s ———— HOME GROCERY Phone 146 | MARINE PHONE Home Liquor Store—Tel. 699 | American Meat—FPhone 38 m":::fcm mn"::' ol 4 b Stove—Fuel Ol Delivery Bodding Transfer The Juneau Laundry| ThomasHardware Co.
