Linda has been 20th Century- | tackle. She's a beauty. Anybody who saw “Hotel for Women,” and her first starring role, knows that. But here was the catch. For her poise, her ap- pearance of maturity, Linda came to Hollywood (from Dallas, Texas) as a child of 15. She hadn't faced a camera before, except for a screen test on her first trip when she was dismissed as “too young.” Gets Romantic Lead At 15 she didn't look “too young” but rather like a good bet for star- dom. And they handed her the lead- ing role—romantic—opposite James Ellison. She photographed beauti- fully, and her acting was unusual considering it was a first flight. But she was still 15, and Hollywood can’t excitement and confusion, has over- | |looked the fact, here’s a reminder: Linda, was 16 years old Monday, Fox’s “problem child"—but the kind | be older. of problem a studio is glad w\as the studio first insisted she was, her first picture | have 15-year-old leading ladies. | A girl of fifteen in the movies Nov. 7. — In| ejther acts her age or cheats on it one way or another. Those big eyes are brown, like her hair, and the teeth are straight and white, the figure is her own. It does lie, however, about her sophistication. For Linda talks gravely, quietly, with poise but once in a while she be s the 16- year-old. As when she tells about her “walking lesson.” She takes one daily, she says, because Gregory Ratoff, her director, “says I walk like a duck.” Since Linda arrived in April, things have happened so quickly and’ furipusly that she hasn't had time to realize what her new star- dom means—“except that I know I'm awfully lucky.” She's playing now opposite Tyrone Power, who is one of her two favor- ite actors-—the other is Don Ameche —in “Daytime Wife.” ., CGOODIE SALE Nov. 4, 20lh Y Marget,— of Norway David M. Hollywood Sights And Sounds By Robbin Coons HOLLYWOOD, Cal., Nov. 7.—The silent man, never really left the screen, is topping the market again. In days when all screen heroes were silent, because the screen itself w the taciturn hero was epitomized in Two-Gun Bill Hart, who spoke from both hips rather than from subtitles, strong, who For many dreary years of excessive screen talk Gary Cooper alwart of the silent (comparatively) standard. Now, he's getting right good Look at Henry Fonda, and Jimmy Stewart, and Ran- was a lone as the newer school of heroes develops, company dolph Ecott, and John Wayne. . . . Gary Cooper was just beginning to rove the cinema ranges, when sound came in. With it came Broadway and talk—the more talk the better. The faster the better. The louder the better. That's what they thought. The Broadway heroes, who didn’t have the chest expansions Hollywood traditionally nurtured and demanded, made up for it with chatter. The market in strong, silent men hit a temporary lull. Then the screen quieted down, and about that time Messrs. Cooper et als came into their own. Gary Cooper, like Garbo, talked from the beginning of the new era. Only Gary didn't talk so much. And Gary was given things to'say when he did talk. Be- tween speeches, he was that quiet, shy fellow who was hell-on- wheels when he got riled up. Wayne (in “Stagecoach”) and Scott (in “Jesse James,” Frontier Marshall,”) followed that traditional line. Wayne was the two-gun kid and the under dog; he didn't say much but he did aplenty; he got audiences to rooting for him right away. Fonda and Stewart ,the “country boys” of Hollywood, have the secret. Fonda started movies with “The Farmer Takes a Wife” and the same shy, rather awkward, hesitant characterization crops up now and again in all his roles. He won't be shy as Tom Joad in “The Grapes of Wrath,” but the silence and certainly the awkwardness will be there. Of Stewart, who goes to town when “Mr, Smith Goes to ‘Washington,” it can’t be said that he’s ever very silent—not on the screen. But he'’s generally shy, and more than a little hesi- tant. As the warrior in an uphill fight, he is a sure bet for audience sympathy. That goes for any kind of hero, but it’s especially true when the protagonist is a bit shy or inarticulate and, apparently at least, overwhelmed and uncertain. That's where the main difference lies between the strength and silence of Two Gun Bill Hart and its modern counterpart in Cooper, Fonda, Stewart and others. Audiences admired Two Gun Bill for his ruggedness and daredeviltry; they admire the same qualities in the current crop, but—in addition they have the feeling that the fellows need a helping hand, a kindly boost to «climb out of their shyness and reticence.
