R. Hermann, on Cal- houn Avenue. The more formal type of program was cast aside for the cccasion and those attending enjoyed a series of Hallowe'en games, of more or less hilarious na- ture. One of these, the apple relay, was the most mirth provoking, teams of three vieing with each other to peel, core and eat an apple. Prizés were ™.m during the even- ing by Mrs. Calvin Pool, Mrs. Charlés Fox, Mrs. Marcus 'Jensen and Mrs. F. G. Campbell, of the Douglas Club, and Mrs, R. B. Lesh- er and Mrs. Birdie Blomgren of the Juneau Club. Adding interesting variety to a program given over principally to games was a group of original poems read by Mrs. L. P. Dawes, all oI\ which were received with enthus- iasm. ' Mrs. Hermann delighted— and for a time puzzled—the group with a demonstration of mystic| reading, as a concluding number on | the evening’s entertainment. A novel idea in refreshments wnsl presented by the serving of the guests on individual biack lacquer- ed trays, with orange paper doilies. Tiny red apples were scooped out to serve as candle holders for the ceparate trays, and over the candle's flame guests toasted marshmallows. | The committee in charge of the event, one of the three purely so-| cial meetings of the club year, was compessd of Mrs. Frank Harris, ' chairman, and Mrs. Charles Crozier. Directed by Frank Capra. Cast: James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Clande Rains, Edward Arnold, Guy Kibbee, Thomas Mitchell, Eugene Pallette, Beulah Bondi, H. B. Warner, Harry Carey, Astrid Allwyn, ahd others. Nov. 1—Here is another, and the best Frank Capra's super-eminence as a movie HOLLYWOOD, Cal., to date, reason for diréctor. In the tale of an underdog, a simple lad who goes to Wash- ington with his unalterably American beliefs in justice and right and fights for them against the harrowing efforts of wily, exper- ienced adversaries, Capra spreads a bounteous feast of compelling movie entertainment “Mr. Smith” has everything—drama, excitement, abundant human interest, comedy, suspense, romance. It has a wholly sympathetic and likable hero (Stewart) who fights uphill, is beaten down, gets up and fights again, alone except for the girl (Artaur), and finally wins over all odds. It all goes on against the backdrop of Washington life, with its high point on the floor of the Senate where Mr. Smith, had bloody but unbowed, ulti- mately wins. He’s a hero to cheer about in a picture to cheer about, and the character puts Stewart up there as acior and star, with Miss Arthur only a little way behind. “Mr. Emith” is a movie no American can afford fo miss. “NINOTCHKA.” Screenplay by Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, Walter Reisch from story by Melchior Lengyel. Directed by Ernst Lubitseh. Cast: Greta Garbo, Meclvyn Douglas, Ina Claire, Bela Lugosi, 8ig Rumann, Felix Bressart, Alexander Granach, Gregory Gaye, Rolfe Sedan, Edwin Maxwell, Richard Carle. Garbo laughs—as the ads say—and you'll laugh with her. “Ninotehka” is the tale of a humorless, analytical Soviet girl who NOW AT charming hestessess give thoughtful guests who bring gifts of deliclous Van Duyn Candies. Little e w Perey’s 7/6214 Q’i mff exclusively YAM DUYN CHOCOLATE SHOPS comes to’ Paris to check up on three comrades who came to sell some jewels for the state treasury. Ninotchka meets a white Rus- sian exile (Douglas) and liftle by little forgets her official business. That's when she learns to laugh—but audience laughter begins before Garbo appears ,and continues steadily. In her first comedy role, the Swede reveals herself as a sur- passingly clever, subtle actress. So, for that matter, is the film, satirizing with Lubitsch’s razor-edged wit a Soviet attitude, without, however, sinking to blatant propaganda. The “Lubitsch touch” is rampant. Effective is the Soviet trio—Rumann, Bressart, Granach—and Douglas has never done finer work. Miss Claire, however, seems wasted on her role. Sample Garbo line: “The latest mass trials were a huge success. There'll be fewer and better Hussians.” “HOLLYWOOD CAVALCADE.” Screenplay by Ernest Pascal from story by Hilary Lynn and Brown Holmes, Directed by Irving Cummings. Cast: Alice Faye, Don Ameche, J. Edward Bromberg, Alan Curtis, Stuart Erwin, Jed Prouty, Buster Keaton, Donald Meek. From the nickelodeon to the talkies, the history of Holly- wood, fictionized, parades the screen in the effective, sometimes sentimental narrative of a prop-boy who rose to directing fame, a minor Broadway actress who became a movie star. Nostalgic, technically accurate, spotted with faces of old-timers, the film splotlights two warblers doing excellent acting jobs— Ameche and Paye.
