CAMERA! ACTION! Many of the stories Hollywood used to hang on Samuel Gold- wyn were untrue but Gregory Ratoff really says the things that are attributed to him. You can get a laugh a minute watching the excitable Russian direct Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell in “Daytime Wife." This week he is doing a scene between the two stars and a Negro maid named Mildred Ratoff’s instructions to the actors are funnier than the dialogue in the picture. “Remember, Mildred,” he shouts, “you are to run like a deer— but not too fast.” Power and Miss Darnell, who are married in the picture, are entering their apartment and the maid is hurrying from the kitchen to meet them. {» Tyrone has heard from a friend that his wife had been seen at Sheepshead Bay. “I told him that it couldn't be true, dear,” he §dys to her, “because we don’t know anybody at Sheepshead Bay.” Ratoff has his own ideas about how the line should be read. He takes Tyrone’s place and tries to illustrate, but his efforts to y “Sheepshead Bay" are so funny that the company breaks out nickers. 3 “You laugh at me, huh,” says Ratoff. “All right, some of you I)Qple try to pronounce the names of those Polish towns.” * He stalks behind the camera and orders the scene to be done again. And this time the actors please him. He is all smiles. “Cut!” he cries. “That was perfect! Print it!” “But, Mr. Ratoff,” interrupts Assistant Director Freddie Spencer. “But what?” demands Ratoff. “Wasn't it a perfect scene?” “Yes, sir,” says Spencer, “but we can't print it. The cameras weren't turning. It was only a rehearsal.” Ratoff, who had forgotten this in his excitement, looks baf- fled for a moment, then shrugs. “All right,” he says, “let's shoot it. and Ty, you can be even better.” On M-G-M's lot two, Mickey Rooney and Lewis Stone are doing an e;m ior scene for “Judge Hardy and Son.” The set And this time, Linda rhfi(s\fr: reception €harming hostessess glve thoughtful guests who bring gifts of deliclious Van Duyn Candies. The car has a fox’s tail tied to the 'radiator cap. It also has a sign beneath the number plate which reads: “Pass quietly. Driver sleeping.” Before Mickey gets into the car, he calls for a eushion to be put lnfa the seat—to make him look taller. An assi.st.ant relays the request to a prop man., “Get a man maker for Rooney!” he shouts. Nothing puts Mickey out of countenance. Five minutes later, when Lewis Stone has gotten out of thie car and is speaking his lines, Rooney ajtempts to attract attention to himself by waving his hand. Director George B! Seifz orders the scene to be done over again, “And don't wave your hand this time, Mickey,” he says mildly. “I think that is strictly a California gestyre.” With the temperature hitting 104 outside the sound stage, Director Alfred Hitehicock is trying to film an English dinner party rence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, Reginald Denny, Gladys Cooper and Nige] Bryce are making small talk as the studio lights beat down upon them. For the lean Olivier, the heat is not so hard to take, but Nigel Bruge is visibly suffering. As soon as the scene is over, he peels off his coat and mops his ‘brow. “This is awful,” he says. “By gad, on a day like this, T wish T was Arthur Treacher.” When you visit the “Rebecca” set, some member of the cast is sure to tell you the latest rumor about the picture. Now that all the studios are slashing budgets, they say, Selz- nick is going to cut down the title and simply call the picture “Becky.™ You'll Find Food Fner and Service More Compiete at THE BARANOF COFFEE SHOP FORD AGENCY (Authorized Dealers) GREASES Foot of Main Street GAS -~ Omns Junean Motors Garbage Hauled Reasonable Monthly Rates E.0.DAVIS | TELEPHONE 212 Phone 4753 SANITARY PIGGLY WIGGLY Jones-Stevens Shop H LADIES'—MI READY-TO-WEAR Seward Street Near Third ZORIC SYSTEM CLEANING PHONE 15 Alaska Laundry N B L TR i A Alaska Music Supply Arthur M.
