The report is a supplement to an earlier release which pointed out that determined by five factors: the ailable supply of can- ncd salmon, the general business activity of the country, consumer | incomes, wholesale meat prices, and wholesale prices of all foods. The earlier report demonstrated a close relationship of wholesale priceés with these mln-l factors over a long period of are prim: years. Possible Supnlv le currei report tentatively » possible supply of Americs (‘Jm\l‘d salmon for the coming year at a top figure of eight million cases of all varieties, pointing out that this is a generous estimate, and that the actual supply may be under this figure The general business prospect for the coming months is presented as salmon | By GEORGE McMANUS HE DOESN'T WANT TO GO / POTATO CHIPS—CANDIES ! The report auots from a large number of business analysts. A quotation from | a leading financial service summar- | izes this viewpoint: “The busines: outlook suggests further ihprove-| ment over the near future. At the same time no sustained period 'of vigorous business expansion appears at all likely and recurrence of for- eign disturbance to our markets is/ not improbable.” Purchasing Power Increases Reports from government sources indicate that consumer purchasing power has been inereasing during recent months. Prices of competitive foods, which have been at a low level, are not expected to rise during the coming, months except on a few ocmmodi- ties, according to the U. S. Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Market supplieés of hogs and poul- | try are expected to be larger during the coming months, but market sup- plies of cattle and lambs are ex- pected to be smaller. Prospects Canners’ and distributors’ stocks of canned goods other than salmon are somewhat higher than a year ago, but acreage this year on many vegetables is reducd from last year and the total supply of several can- ned vegetables this Fall will prob- ably be less than a year ago. The pack of canned tuna in Cali- fornia during the first five months of 1939 totaled 1,060,000 cases, an increose of 67 percent over the same period of 1938. In the same period the mackerel pack in California amounted to 146,000 cases, 28 per- cent less than last year. e The Book ALASKA, Revised and Enlarged, Now On Sale: $1.00. fired 155 mm. coastal defense guns (as above) and anti- nlrcrmumhllh ‘DEFENSE’—When Uncle Sam's cadets from West Point had military classwork n ____ }Alaska Eleciric Light & Power Co.
