DUAL FEATURES Tonight and Saturday GUN PO THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 1939. 4T HEATRK T The Show Place of Juneau NT JUSTICE! Thrills that come fast and furious! "SOUTH OF . IRIS MERIDTH aad the SONS of the PIONZERS CRIME PICTURE FEATURED NOW ATLOCAL SHOW Double BiIII(iradion Wil Open Tonight at Capitol A gangster screen story written and produced as such stori ould be—never glorifying the de: does who prey upon defenseless siness men, never extolling law and order to the point of detracting from the swift, breath-taking action — Co- lumbia’s “Crime Takes a Holiday,” which opens tonight at the Capitol Theatre. Jack Holt is starred in the film, as a fighting district attorney forced to desperate measures in or- der to rid his city of gangland terror. Unable to trace the racket crimes to the “head man,” the district at- torney prosecutes an ex-convict of murders directly traceable to the gangsters he must capture. The for- mer convict, conniving in the scheme, is sentenced to be hanged and the gunmen take a “holiday,” until after the execution. But the district attorney, unable to obtain a reprieve for his ‘vic- tim,” forces their hands. Police pre- tend to be a rival gang, and “take over” swing into immediate action. And | the district attorney promptly cracks down. | Holt is given a fine role. In re-| turn, he offers an excellent per-| formance. Douglas Dumbrille, cast as the racket czar, is seen to ad-| | vantage as the “brains” behind the| | racket terror who poses as an hon-| | est, and indignant public-spirited | citizen. Second attraction on the double bill is “South of Arizona,” starring Charles Starrett.
