A man sitting atop the highest portion of the dredge was able to reach over his head and touch the bridge girders casily as he passed under. | If “everything goes all right,” the big General Construction Com- pany dipper dredge will move un- der the Douglas bridge at 1 o'clock this afternoon with about six in- ches to spare. Capt. William Burke, Superin- tendent of the company’s operations here, said this morning that an attempt would be made to move the dredge from its moorings near the Alaska Juneau dock to the small boat harbor on this after- noon’s low tide. ; The dredge stretches approxi- mately 63 feet into the blue from the water line. At zero stage of the tide, there is approximately 69 feet of clea 1ce between the bridge and the surface of the channel. | This afternocn at 1 o'clock, at low tide for the day, the tide w,\\ a 54 footer, which would give dredge a clearance of about six m- ches. If the maneuver fails, the dredge may be damaged. At any rate, if it fails to get through with the tug Edward Schank, General Construc- tion Company will have to wait for minus tides this week-end. If they get through, “work will begin immediately,” Capt. Burke said, working three shifts for 24- hour operation with about 32 men employed all told, on the dredge shifts and the tugboat shifts. Also to be employed in the dredg- ing operation will be two 330 yard |dump barges and an oil barge that will carry about one hundred 42- gallon barrels a trip, supplying the dredge oil burners. Cash Cole’s boat Jazz is being used for supplementary towing work | in addmon to the Schank. - FRIENDS VISIT i of Van- Betty Barr roundtrip- | Mrs. Berdine Smith couver, Wash., and Mrs. of Fort Stevens, Ore., pers on the Princess Charlotte,| visited here yesterday with Mr,; and Mrs. Georgc Sundburg I lost, 209 picked up from boats by lin Juneau 40,000 pounds, selling at 10% Three couples making a RQusiness and pleasure cruise through Southeast Alaska for the past three weeks arrived this week on the 50- foot motor yacht Madura, owned by H.
