Worker in a certain rock Saucy Indigo plant S = < H§l N Sho, Killed By Mounties The Whitehorse Star, of July 28, in a special dispatch from Daw- son says James Croteau, well known French-Canadian trapper and hunter on Dominion Creek was killed Monday (July 24) in a run- ning fight with R.CMP. in bush back of his cabin near Old Jen- sen Road House on Dominion Creek road He ook his stand against Mounties who had gone out to in- vestigate reports that the man was deranged and had made threats against lives of certain old time acquainhtances. Trying to approach him in a kindly manner the police were re- buffed and had to take certain measur s it became evident the man was violently inclined. He died shortly after being taken. Police had to shoot him. Major Sandys-Wunsch, commanding the R.C.M.P. in Dawson, was in charge. During the fray a bullet from Croteau’s gun grazed the Major's hand. No one else in the party was harmed. Inquest held Wednesday. Believed in late seventies, Cro- teau was active many many years as trapper and hunter during the winter and did odd jobs for gov- ernment on road or for mining company during summer. He was well known about town and usu- ally arrived in Dawson during spring and fall for vacation from quiet of the hills.. Of late he had been in a disturbed frame of mind ! and had made threats against sev- eral old time acquaintances in the locality. His sudden death was a shock to many who had known him for years. At the Chamber meeting today Dr. W. W. Council reported he had consulted Seton Thompson, Assist- ant Alaska Agent of the Bureau of Fisheries, in the matter and had learned that the herring catch to date this year in the area men- tioned has been 1500 barrels, worth 70 cents a barrel to the fishermen.
