CAMPAIGN TO SAVE FORESTS SCOUTER'S KeY FROM FIRE GETS UNDER WAY FOR 1939; POSTERS ISSUED riotes YOURS IN TRUS" Nature. has ble: ' country Until recently there existed the danger that the axe would cut down our timber faster than it grows, but islation and scientific management have combined to check the devas-/ tation of our forests by man’s greedy encroachment. There is, however, another dnnger which threatens to deplete our val- uable forest resources, a danger less easily_controlled, a veritable demon —fire. A five-year record by the U. Forest Service estimates the annual number of forest fires at 156,000 and the average area of forest land burried over each year at 41.500,000 acres. by negligence, ignorance and indif- ference. Protection Costly Adequate protection from the fire requires increasing expenditures of federal, state and private money running into many millions. It also requires a constant effort by all responsible agencies of creating a | proper public attitude toward ‘the forest fire problem. Charred 7 stretches of ravished areas are not | only offensive to our aesthetic sense, but they are, in many instances;, a direct cause of floods and an ex- travagant loss of valuable soil through erosion. Many lives are needlessly lost in ecombatting fires that are, in the majority of cases, ' | caused by thoughtlessness and care- | less individuals. “We” must protect “We" means you and you! and you. Our Southeast Alaskan forests, | due to sufficient humidity, are fre- quently spared the evil of dis- astrous fires, yet there is clear evi- dence of large fires in this section in the past and we must be con- scious of this danger. Considerable five hazard exists in the dryer sec- tions of the interior, at the out- skirts of the National Forests and in the so-called interior forests of the public domain. The appeal of our picture is especially directed to homesteaders, miners, prospectors, trappers, fur farmers and others who inhabit or travel those regions. Everybody a Firefighter An awakened public realization of the value of forests and the neces- sity of preserving them would tend | to make every individual a cooper- ator with forest officers, fire war- dens and fire fighters.
