Hollywood Sights And Sounds | . By Sebbie Cooss HOLLYWOOD, Cal., June 10.—It’s natural-looking, Mack Sen- nett behind a movie desk again. He's the Sennett, a Iittle altered by time but essentially his hair no whiter than it was, his face no redder than to be when he boomed with laughter at some. screen antic he felt sure would help maintain his crown of “King of Comedy.” That laugh of his still booms, though his crown is long gone and his purse is leaner than it used to be in th lush days of his fame. The desk is different. The office is different. It is the imper- sonal office of a man called in to help on one picture. It lacks the “Sennett touch”—photos and trophies and memos and pipes— of a man who bossed his own pictures and made millions with them. There ny giant bathtub in a private suite next to his office, as there used to be at the old Sennett plant, now Republic studios. There aren’t any tribes of harum-scarum writers in his wake, thinking up “gags” te “kill” or “panic” or merely impress the Old Man. It's different—that way. the same, it uses Sennett is at 20th Century-Fox as associate producer and tech- nical adviser on “Hollywood Cavalcade,” the projected color film celebrating the rise of movietown. What Sennett, who made bath- ing beauties and Keystone Kops and Chaplin and a host of other stars great, doesn’'t know about Hollywood is so little it would rattle in a walnut. He knows the up side—and the down side too, because lately he has been a king deposed by talkies, a producer without a production, a celebrity with only the past to celebrate. “We're going to have a great picture,” he says. “I never saw we can serve you better NOW —our newly rebuilt kitchen and paniry enable us to improve that service to our diners on which we have always prided ourselves. PERCY’S has. [} b such enthusiasm as Irving Cummings, the director, That counts for everything, enthusiasm. “Hollywood Cavalcade” will be a movie saga starring Alice Faye and Don Ameche, covering a period roughly from 1913 to the present. Between Cummings, who used to be an actor, and Sennett, who was a pioneer along with D. W. Griffith, they ought to do it right “Good script,” says Mack. “About nobody in particular—but the story of Hollywood will be there. Bathing beautie: Sure. We're having an argument right now about those. They're stream- lined now—I always went for curves. Don’t know how it'll come out. (Boom of laughter.)’ With this double chin of mine and this paunch, you might say I still go for curves in the human figure.” There have been reports that Mack was broke—that the man who once cleaned up $8,000,000 gross on a $250,000 production called “Mickey” with Mabel Normand was flat. Mack says it isn't so. “T've been re-issuing the early Bing Crosby and W. C. Fields pictures, which belong to me, and I've been doing right well with he says. If they hold a reunion of local lights who got their start with Sennett, as they're planning, it will be one of the brightest gath- erings in town. Some of those Keystone Kops are directors like Wesley Ruggles, Mal St. Clair, Eddie Cline, the former Sennett stars whose fame is still bright include Chaplin, Carole Lombard, Wallace Beery, Louise Fazenda, Sally Eilers, Edgar Kennedy, Andy Clyde to say nothing of a “cavalcade” of former brilliance headed by Gloria Swanson. ‘em.
