GROUP REPORTS ~ GAINS IN YEAR Alaska Association’s Ac-| fivities Are Highly ' Successful ' Mest successful year in the his- tory of the Alaska Tuberculosis As- sociation is reported in the organi- ties, released today by Rev. G. Ed- ward Knight, Secretary. : In the year the activities of the Association have experienced changes, advances and success. The organization of Tuberculosis Com- mittees in the larger population centers of the Territory, the in- creased interest and good will which are evident in correspondence with people throughout the Territory and the comments accompanying the seal sale letters and the 18 per- cent increase in the seal sale it- self, the cooperation of the news-| papers and radio stations, the Bu- reau of Indian Affairs, the Depart- ment of Education and the Terri torial Department of Health have all helped to achieve this success. Field Adviser on Job Early in the year, as a result of Dr. Kleinschmidt's visit to Alaska and after extensive correspondence, the National Tuberculosis Associa- tion offered the services of a Field Adviser, Mrs. Florence B. Breed, to the Alaska Tuberculosis Association. This offer was accepted and during +her stay Mrs. Breed traveled through the Territory, meeting interested persons and helping with the or- ganization of the local Tuberculosis Committees. These groups have | proven to be very interested and |active in handling the educational programs in their communities and througin them the Alaska Tubercu- losis Association was able this year, for the first time, to participate in the Early Diagnosis Campaign con- | ducted annually by the National Tuberculosis Association. Through the cooperation of the office of Indian Affairs and the De- partment of Education, the two | teaching units for elementary | schools and for junior and senior high schools have been placed in| all of the schools of the Territory. |In many there are Iso-type charts and library kits and in other cases either through the activities of the local committees or on request of the teachers or principals of the schools, other educational material on the subject of tuberculosis has | been made available for usage in the schools. The films which the | Association has available to loan have been widely used and com- i ments received have proven them ,to be among the most popular and successful educational materials available. | Clinics Supported | During the year the organization has contributed $3.000 to the sup- port of the Tuberculin Testing and Early Case Finding Clinics conduct- | ed by Dr. J. C. Haldeman, Tubercu- losis Clinician. He has, during this “r.ime, visited .many , isolated com- jmunities which are without regular medical. services and his findings afe evidence of the tremendous task which faces the people of Alaska if | .they are to overcome this disease {which at.the present time is the leading cause of death in the Ter- ritory. | The 1938.Christmas seal sale, the fifth in«Alaska, was by far the most | successful. The activities of the local organizations and the publicity ac-| corded the sale by the newspapers and radio of the Territory and the ple of the purposes of the organiza- tion and the uses of the funds de- rived from the sale of Christmas seals, were all evident in the fine increase made over campaigns con- ducted in previous years. The total sale to date is $5,408.60 an increase of 18 percent over last year. The tubercu- losis situation in Alaska is one, the solution of which will take many years of intensive effort and coop- eration by all interested people and agencies in the Territory At the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the Associa- tion held May Harry G. Watson was reelected President for the coming year, Mrs. William Paul was reelected Vice-President and Rever- end G. Edward Knight was reelect- Secretary. James MecNaughton a5 selected as Treasurer for the year 1939-40, This year the Association partici- pated for the first time in the Early Diagnosis Campaign conducted an- nually by the National Tuberculosis Association. To date it has received reports of very active campaigns in progress in Petersburg, Wrangell, Skagway, Seward, Sitka, Ketchikan and Juneau. Reports from other lo- calities are expected soon. DODGERS DEFEAT CUBS OVER LONG ROUTE BY 3702 Reds Blast Out Five Runs in Thirteenth Inning fo Beat Bees (By Associated Press) Gene Moore tripled and subse- quently stole home in the fourteenth inning yesterday to give the Brook- lyn Dodgers a victory over the Chi- cago Cubs. Moore got home on catcher Garback's fumble. The rampant Reds exploded a five-run blast in the thirteenth in- ning yesterday to defeat - the “Bees in a game that started out as a pitcher’s duel between Johnny Van- der Meer and veteran Danny Mac- Fayden, Before the game ended the Bees used five chuckers and the Reds used three. Lefty Gomez led the Yanks in a triumph over Cleveland yesterday with seven-hit pitching and a couple of singles and pounding Jack Kramer and Bob Harris for seven hits in the first three innings. The Athletics coasted to a victory over the 8t. Louis Browns in yes- terday’s game. Wilbur Brubaker’'s home run in the eighth inning yesterday broke a deadlock and gave the Pirates a victory over the Phillies.
