Is Fine Vessel A new steamer to Alaska, the Taku, sailed into Juneau’s harbor this morning, a sleek 235-foot com- bination passenger and freight boat, all of steel. Captain of the newly commis- sioned Alaska Transportation Com- pany craft, sister ship to the Tyee, which will be placed on the run in July, is Eldred Hansen, veteran Al- aska skipper transferred from the steamer Tongass. First Mate is Larry Parks, former Juneau man, well known through- out Alaska boating circles. Victor Seidelhuber is Second Mate, Dan Ethier is Third Mate. Bill Scott is Purser and Herbert Woods is Chief Engineer. The Taku, | black hull with white trim, se and varnished | bridge facing, is of 1,360 tons, and. is completely equipped for all types ' of frozen shipments. With a speed of 12 knots and a varied Southeast Alaska itinerary, the Takw bids to become a popular | passenger boat, although she car- ries but a dozen passengers. | Passenger accommodations —are, commodious with new double berths | and excellent ventilation. Vibration | on the craft is reportedly nil. | Dining room accommodations are perfectly adequate, with 18 bwweli arm chairs and two tables. The well | appointed galley is crewed with “all | white, all American” men. On the boat deck, aft, a comfor- | table, newly furnished lounge room | gives ample room for all passenger needs. The room is tastefully done and is embellished with two oil paintings from the facile brush of Nina Crumrine, well known Alaska | artist. ] Accommodations for the crew of 33 are unusually adequate, with| three-berth roomy staterooms and| spacious shower and toilet rooms. | All toilets aboard the craft are also equipped with showers. D 24 PASSENGERS FLOWN BY TWO MARINE AIRMEN, Marine Airways pilots Alex Holden and Johnny Amundsen wound up a busy day yesterday, having made five flights before the day was finished. Holden started the day off by car- rying two loads of freight to the Polaris-Taku mine, including 500 pounds of halibut and salmon, and bringing back five passengers, Mr. and Mrs. B. O. Brynelson, J. Pink- ham, Herb McLean and W. Effer- ington. Holden then left on one leg of the Tuesday mail run, taking Leslie Melvin to Hoonah, B. Mellum to Pelican City, and Paul Sorenson to Kimshan Cove; taking Lloyd Jar- man from Kimsham to Chichagof while in the islands. On the return trip, Mrs. E. L. Hughes and son came in from Kim- shan, while Mrs. Frank Johnson flew in from Hoonah. Yesterday morning, Amundsen came back from the islands with Clyde Bolyan, Norman Cameron, Miss Miller, A. Heino and Crockett Metcalf from Chichagof. Going out again an another leg of the mail run, T. P. Jacobsen was flown to Chatham, Mrs. E. N. Mur- phy, Mrs. Ole Taug and H. Taug to Tenakee, and Theo Breyer to Todd. Al Lagergren came back from Ten- akee and Mrs. J. O. West came back from Baranof. B g S HAND TROLLERS T00 MUST USE LICENSE PLATES ON BOATS Hand trollers as well as power trollers must obtain and nail to their boats the new license plates re- quired this year for the first time, Warden Don Haley was notified yes- terday by the Bureau of Fisheries. Previously it was understood only power trollers would need the plates. The licenses are available at the Bu- reau of Fisheries office in the Fed- eral Building here and are furnished free. From the local banks—Lane 12,000 pounds, 8% and 6! cents. e — FAST CRUISER LAUNCHED FOR JOSEPH LYNCH JThe Bonnie Jo, Joe Lynch's new 22 foot V-bottom cruiser took to the water yesterday and knocked off 18 miles an hour on a test run in the harbor. The craft was built by Sandy Woodman and Andy Bernsten, and waterfront talk says the Bonnie Jo is the “biggest little ship” on the Channel. With a beam of seven feet six inches and plenty of depth, a stream- lined cabin houses a six cylinder Chrysler engine and sleeping and living accommodations for three persons.
