LOUIS, May 23—Donald Barnes, the St. Louis businessman who is taking a fling at being a major-leauge baseball team presi- dent, tell a good story about Sig Gryska and Buck ‘Newsom, two of his favorites on the St. Louis Browns. Last year Barnes offered Newsom, I the eccentric pitcher, a $1,000 bonus if he won 20 games. On the last day of the season, Newsom held 19 victories and was scheduled to pitch the first game of a double-header with the Chicago White Sox. “Buck came to me with tears in his eyes, and asked me to give him that bonus, anyway. I told him to go out there and win the game first. “He was leading, 2-1, along the middle of the game, when Gryska, the shortstop, booted one that cost us two runs. “Newsom gave the youngster hell and glared over at my box. T wouldn’t look at him. What I was interested in was Gryska. It was enough to break the nerve of just :about any kid. Sig knew what that game meant to Newsom, and he was trying to win a major-league berth for himself, “Gryska showed me what kind of stuff he had in him in the eighth inning. We were frailing by one tally when he came to bat with a man on, smacked out a triple, and then scored himself on a fly. That ave the game to Buck, and I cheer- fully gave him the thousand. It was worth that to see Gryska come through.” .. HELLER'S BARBER SHOP Open for business at the old loca- tion, 116 Seward St. Old and new customers welcome. adv. e, DR.
