In Hollywood's mind that isn't gamiling. That’s money in the bank—with inter- est. True, it's more than they've ever spent on a strictly starring vehicle for a child. But this child is Temple. For the fourth consecutive year Temple leads the Motion Picture Heralds ex- hibitor poll as the nation’s top box-office favorite. That is a feat unequalled either by Will Rogers or Marie Dressler. To keep Temple there, they'll spend more on her pictures, give her better casts—and they won't think of it as gambling. A producer with a million to spend can be séparated from it as easily in the movies as he can in a bearish market. But he cdh take out insurance. Having Temple under contract is one excellent form of insurance, presently not available. The next best bet, generally, is to sink the-dough’ into an outdoor spectacle—a “western.” A picture like this has to be pretty bad to avoid clicking. Even when the actors chew the scenery, there’s so much of it left that the public eats it up. A big musical is a 50-50 deal. The whole project is, like the music, can go in “sweet” and come out “sour.” It’s probably hind- sight that says “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” was no gamble. Actually, hobody—not even Darryl Zanuck—knew beforehand to what extent Irving Berlin's tunes would sweep the land in their screen revival, On the other hand, a piece like “Top o' the Town” promised much but delivered little. A team like MacDonald and Eddy will show a profit in anything they do now at the crest, but even they can slip occasionally. (They've made much more suc- cessful films than “Girl of the Golden, West,” for ihstance.) Star names used to be the only box-office insurance needed. Not so today. Stars can givé a poor picture a lift but they can't (Viz: Clark Gable-Myrna Loy in “Parnell.”) lost—not because it was “Snow White” clickéd TOMATO SAUCE Can ‘5¢ SNOWDRIFT | 3pound tin CRISCO 65c COFFEE 5 Ze APPLES ° make it go.
