Hollywood Sights And Sounds By Robbie Coons HOLLYWOOD, Cal, Oct. 1.-T've never met Ray Giles but I'm sure he has something in that new volume of his on “Sleep.” It includes, among other chapters, essays on the sleep-wooing practices of many movie people. But when I meect Ray Giles, I want (o ask him a question, to wit: “Have you ever heard, Mr. Giles, of my insomnia cure?” “No,” he will say, because until now NOBODY has heard of it “Well, here it is,” I will say. “I lie abed, and sleep is a teaser, heartless and elusive, I say, Ha, so it's that way, is it? And then I turn memory loose. I think back to occasions beyond number on which those Siamese twins of filmland oratory—Mr. Louis B. Mayer and Mr. Will H. Hays—have cast a hypnotic spell over whole assemblies, large, small and medium colossal. Once again, relaxed and helpless, I let the torrents of oratory flow over me. Word follows word in endless flood, each word a sheep, each sheep a yawn. Sheep and words hurdle fences, and T never need to count them. In five minutes, I am paralyzed, blotto.” Once or twice before this space has contained gentle hints regarding the Mayer-Hays speeches. Plainly too gentle. Their best friends won't tell them, so I will—as an humble contribution to the gaiety of future gatherings: You, Mr. Mayer, are an excellent speaker. Often I have admired your sincerity, frequently your choice of words, always your position as a very smart hombre when it comes to making movies. You are betrayed, I think, by your sentiments. Emotion scls the better of you. Once you have pulled out the tremolo stop, we are goners—and so are you. Maybe you can't trick the tides, but you can certainly sneeze at time. Please, please, next time, stick to the prepared text—and give only a third of that. And you, Mr. Hays, you gave a perf speech the other day. You said you would merely add a few words (as you had said so often before) to those of your-good-friend-Mr.-Mayer. For one golden moment, after those first few words, we thought you were going to sit down! Did you? Ah, no, you went shead and in so doing you spoiled perfection.” Before even you realized it, you-had launched into your SPEECH. Habit, no coubt. YOU HAVE A SURPRISE COMING FOR YOU! Wait and See the Newer and Finer PERCY’S [ A few minutes more, and you were oratorical, with gestures. You drove home Points—which no one had disputed in the first place. You said, in effect, that motion pictures are a fine thing and Hollywood, by cracky, would keep on seeing that motion pic- tures are a fine thing. But you said it powerfully long, sir, power- fully long In fact, sir—and I realize this is lese majeste for sure—be- tween you and your-good-friend-Mr.-Mayer many of us were lulled into such a coma that we almost forgot what the meetin’ was about. I think even the guest of honor forgot! And there’s no. need for it, really, is there? If you think there is, look into your Bible—before the next session, please!— and see how few words Creation took. ‘Which certainly does remind ME. Quick! Period!
