A lot depended on the of corn. If the estimated this year's crop pl from last year exceeded limits, an election would be held in the corn belt to deter- mine whether farmers would be compelled to lock up part of their crop to protect prices on the rest The Department, with a smat- tering of rebellion on its hands in the corn belt already, did want to hold a referendum on whether to impose marketing quotas. Some f mers de- officials feared feat the proposal, and thus throw amount total of carryover certain have to WOl down the farm law in its first real test THE WINNER The Department and the corn crop were like two boys spoiling for a fight. One says this line T'll hit you.” Early this year the Department says: If the estimated corn supply (crop plus carryover) passes 2773,- 000 bushels, we must call for a mar- keting quota referendum. Well, the estimated crop carryover passed that level and the Department, backing away, then said: If the supply passes 2825000000 bushels, we surely must call for a marketing quota. That was in July. And the esti- mated supply did pass that figure. In August, the Department. by law, couldn’t back off any farther. It said: If the supply passes 2,913,000,- “If you cross and 000 buchels, we can't escape asking marketing quotas There arose the hitch. One bu- reau of the Department said the arryover would be 0,000,000 bushels as a minimum. That would have forced the total above 2,913.- 000,000—the deadline. Almost in a fury higher Department officials contradicted the 350,000,000 bushel estimate, insisting it would be only 320,000,000. That brought the total estimated supply down to 2886,- 000,000 bushels and saved the day. No quota referendum was needed. -~ URGES FOREST FIRE CONTROL The Fairbanks Chamber of Com- merce has passed a resolution in favor of establishment of a forest fire control system throughout ing terior Alaska.
