Of the numbor of totally unemployed 702 were in the First Division All but two of the emergency workers were in the First Division and of the partly unemployed 332 of them were in this Division. All of which indicate that the First Division last year was about the onl place in the Territory which had a problem of un- employment. But going a little further into the report, it i found that of the 779 listed as unemployed, 402 werc Jaborers and of this number 361 were in the P Division. With the exception of one or ) in the Second and Fourth the remainder were in Third Division The report reveals very definitely ti Alask major unemployment problem is one from the Out- side. The census clearly shows that the registration was down here in the First Division 1ere come by every boat looking for work. If the census was retaken this year it probably would be revealed that the unemployed have spread fur ver the Terri- tory. They would be found in numbers in ly some of Anchorage and in Fairbanks, and ver them in Nome, __Alaska’s unemployment problem would not serious one at all if it were confined to Alaskans. there has been an influx of men secking work in be a But the Jast two seacons which has flooded the limited labor ma o terrific burden on the Territory's relief r S0 1ong as that condi persists, we will have an unemployment problem in the Territory, and there isn’t very much to be done about it, unemploy- ment census or no unemployment census. About the best that can be done is try to head thers off from coming to Alaska without sufficient funds MAKING THE FOURTH OF PARADE JULY Judging from the made, Juneau is to have one of the best plans now of July parades and celebrations it has had in a good many years. Par- ticula the parade, which hasn't been so much to brag about in recent years, promises to be a real Independence Day column, representative of the city and community. The Chamber of Commerce ball spon- has started the float and rolling by arranging for an elaborat contest. the winner of which will reign as of Liberty for the day. The troops from Chil- icks wil n hand and Navy planes from the naval air base will add color. Several other organizations in addition to the Chamber a well as business houses are planning floats. It will be a fine thing if their plans earry through Located as we are, isolated in the States, we might as Fourth of July in comparison with like communitie: well make something of the instead of carrying on a half-hearted effort. We are fortunate in beir s0 situated that we can still hold an old hioned celebration. In the States, those kind of observan are almost a thing of the to the paved road and the automobile till hold them successfully, past due, primarily, But here in the north reviving for young we can nc } established its independence. That parade should be one of the most colorful Juneau cen in many a if those floats materi- ize in number as antici PERHAPS WE BETTER CAPITALIZE ON IT With 10 days remaining in this mouth, indication ppear to be fa yood that June will set some kind r | for rain.
