W. Griffin from Congressman Carl E.| Mapes of Michigan. Representative | Mapes writes that Mr. Best says he | was appointed and commissioned | a Second Lieutenant in Company | A, First Regiment, Alaska militia,| | on January 22, 1892, by then Gov.| Lyman E. Knapp and as a result oli | such service is entitled to a pension. | | Alaska did have an authorized | militia at the time and it consis- | ed of Company A of Juneau, Secre- | tary Griffin says, but reports of| ;GOV. Knapp fail to show where it ‘was ever an active unit. A certain| sum of money was set aside by Con- gress for the purpose and it finally reached a total of $8,000, none of which apparently was spent for mil- itary purposes. In his report of 1892, | Gov. Knapp, the record shows, made | a request that the $8,000 be expend- |ed for making the militia active but nothing ever came of it.
