DAMAGED MINE AT JONESVILLE RESUMES WORK -~ George Rockefeller Back as Superintendent of Evan Jones, Stewart Reports The Evans-Jones coal mine has resumed operations following the shutdown of several months due to the tragic explosion of last winter, according to B. D. Stewart, Com- missioner of Mines, who returned to his headquarters here on the Alaska this morning. George E. Rockefeller, former - Superintendent at the mine who is now a member of the National Coal Commission, has returned to the operations as Superintendent and Lester Williams, who has been with the Carbonado mine in Wash- ington state, has been selected as Fire Boss. About 30 men are on the workings and it will require about = two weeks to make repairs and get the mine in shape, the Commis- ° sioner estimated. The stipulations as to safety meas- ures set down by the Commissioner have been agreed to under the new operations, Mr. Stewart said The government-owned Esi mine, adjoining the Evans-Jone: has between 30 and 40 men working and is supplying the Anchorage and Evans-Jones market until the latter gets back in production. Prior to the Eska getting in shape to meet the increased demand the Healy River Coal Corporation, owned by Capt. A. E. Lathrop, stepped into the breech, the Commissioner said, and hired an additional crew of 60 | men to step up its output to supply lAnchnmge and other places in the rail belt usually supplied by the Evans-Jones. “The Healy River managem"m not only met the market demand,” |Mr. Stewart said, “but agreed to withdraw from that field when the Eska was able to meet the require- ments, which it has done following > notice.” Mrs. Stewart accompanied her husband to the Westward and they | visited with Mr. Stewart’s son and { family in Anchorage.
