APPEAR, JUNEAU = Two Sepalare Concerts Will Be Given, March 22 and March 24 Twenty young singers, composing the Unive y of Washington Men's Glee Club, directed by Prof. Charles Wilson Lawrence, will give two con- certs in Juneau this month in the Grade School Auditorium. The dates are Tuesday, March 22 and Thurs- day, March 24. There will be a com- plete change in the second appear- ance. The concerts will be of in- teresting and colorful music, ac- cording to the advance agent The singers will arrive on the North Sea, and during the week will appear in concert in Ketchi- kan, Sitka, Petersburg and Wran- gell. 38th Season The Glee Club is now enjoying its thirty-eighth season of musical ac- tivity. Noted for their rich harmony and tonal blending, their precision their fire and enthusiasm, and their abil to interpret correctly and artistically songs of all types and nationalities, these young men have won reeognition as composing one of the ‘truly fine choral organiza- tions of the Pacific Northwest. Distinctive Programs Programs of distinction and var- jety are promised Juneau audiences by Prof. Lawrence. Designed to ap- peal to musician and laymen alike, the Glee Club’s selections will range from 16th century Latin numbers to hilarious burlesques of grand opera, The Latin songs, sung anti- phonally (with an echo choir) and without accompaniment, have proved on past occasions to be one of the most popular features of the program. The Varsity Quartet, an or- | ganization of considerable concert | and radio experience, promises an| act of unusual appeal in its “Melo- | dic Meanderings.” One of the opera burlesques, sung by the Quartet with the assistance of the entire| Glee Club, has for its theme an| apartment house fire and the hor- | rible predicament of the apartment- | dwellers. It is done in traditional grand opera style; many well-known operatic melodies are introduced, and the result is an act of side-split- ting proportions. In Lighter Vein Numbers in lighter vein to be ung by the Glee Club include “Doc- tor Foster.” after the style of Han- del; Franz Abt’s “Laughing Song," in which the laughter never fails to spread contagiously to the audi- ence; and selections from Victor Herbert’s “Naughty Marietta” and George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.” Soloists will be Edward Palma- son, the University's golden-voiced tenor, and Jack Erickson, talented young violinist. Erickson is also a singing member of the Glee Club. Heading the tour party will be Prof. Lawrence, director of the Glee Club for the past twelve years, who is noted not only for his fine choral productions but also as a composer of distinction; Mrs. Lawrence; and Lyle McMullen, manager of the Club who serves also in the capacity of accompanist and assistant direc- tor. | | [ Singing Troupe The Singing troupe is composed of the following men: First tenors: Robert Bowen, Paul Granmo, John Lundberg, Fred Tubb, Lorris West. Second tenors: Ernest Anderson,! Richard Kelly, Edward Palmason, Leslie Rein, William Wells. Bari- tones: Delbert Anderson, Paul El- liott, Jack Erickson, Wallace Git- tings, Arthur Stewart. The Glee Club’s previous visits to Alaska were made in 1928 and 1934, and were enthusiastically welcomed and supported by Alaska residents.
