Former Alaskan With Alaska S. S. Company, Seattle (Seattle Post-Intelligencer) Back in 1907 a Seattle school boy inadverently one morning took a route along the waterfront on his| way to the seat of learning. He never reached it, but instead, sign- | ed on as an oiler and water-tender on the Saratoga, operating to Al- aska for the old Northwest Steam- ship Company From then on his history has Leen one of exceptional activity both in rail and water transporta- | tion and he has found time besides to be a professional ball player, a member of the United States Signal Corps in Alaska, Washington Na- tional Guard, Mayor of Belfair on Hood Canal and a member in good standing of the “Truthful Fisher- men’s League.” His name is Phil Truckey, his initials P. S, and they sometimes call him “Postscript.” Take him by and large he is one of the most efficient and best liked men on the Seattle waterfront. Freight agent for the Alaska Steamship Company now, he is plenty busy, but always has the proper and final retort in any attempt to “rib| him.” Back in the early days on the| a, Phil was a ciated with of dispatcher at Cordova. A year later he returned to Seattle to work for the Northern Pacific, but moved down to Portland when a better chance was offered with the Union Pacific, returning here again to join the A a Steamship Com- pany as rate clerk in 1923, where he has been winning consistent ad- | vanceme ! Phil has a summer home on Hood Canal and an invitation to spend the week-end there is ap- preciated by the fortunate—there is never an idle moment and no sleep. -ee - MATANUSKA FAIR IS TO BE EVENT OF Announcement is made that the | second annual Matanuska Pair will| be held on September 4, 5, and 6. | Almer J. Tracy looked at the hand and then! at Phil and said: “Why in blazes | didn’t you jump into the crank pit | and be done with it?” | Makes Many Shifts | After a few years at sea Phil! hifted to rail, joining the Milwau- | kee road. Here he advanced quick- ! ly from the yards to the local! freight claim department. In 1915 he went to Chitina with the Cop- per River and Northwestern Rail-| road, staying there until 1918 when, variously in the same year, he came to Seattle, worked on the Grand Trunk Dock, joined the steamer Alameda, was shifted to agent at| Kennecott for the Copper River | road, and in September joined the | Signal Corps at Valdez.
