Frank Murphy announced last night a settlement of the strikes /in four of the downtown hotels. The Detroit Hotel Association and the Hotel Workers Union agreed, after a conference lasting four and one half hours, to submit their dif- ference to arbitration to a three man commission. One of the mem- bers of the commission will be from the union, another from the hotel |association and Gov. Murphy will serve as chairman. The strike, which closed all ser- vice yesterday, tok place in the 29 story Book-Cadillac Hotel, 21- story Shelby Hotel, 15 story Detroit- Leland and 15 story Statler Hotel. The sitdowners were waiters, waitresses and other hotel help who are demanding a raise in pay and shorter hours.
