THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, TUESDAY OCT. 13, 1936. FOUND AGAIN, THEN STOLEN Aged Woman, Young Lab- orer, then Thief Are All Involved PITTSBURGH, Oct. 13.—An 85- vear-old woman trudged into police headquarters today ‘and reported she lost a black bag containing savings of $2900 in the ruins of a razed house on a construction project. Early in the morning, lands, 21, a laborer, satchel and the money, only to lose it later in the day to a robber. Rowlands is an orphan. He re- cently got a job with the Works Progress Administration. Before he parted with the money, Rowlands told detectives he nsed about $700 of it to buy a car and some necessities. He said he want- ed to set aside $300 of it for a kindly woman who ‘“helped me when I was out of work.” But Rowlands told a friend of his discovery. The friend intro- duced him to a stranger known as “John.” The three went riding in the new car. Rowlands and his friend went into a store to make a purchase. When they returned “John” had gone with the money, which Rowlands left in the car. Rowlands went to the police. While officers were trying to find out how the money ever got into the ruins, the old lady, Mrs. Anna Reible of suburban North Brad- dock, reported her loss. She said she took a nap during the night in the wrecked house, and could Clyde Row- found the not find the bag after awakening.: The meney, Mrs. Reible told of-| ficers, had 'been saved up over a DELCO off ers Qutstanding Value MODEL RADI Delco Radic Model R-1115—beautiful lay-down cabinet model—five tubes and 44" multicolored translucent dial—offers one of the outstanding | bargains in radio for 1937. Y., de- clined to'return to the job for a re-pose, 'when ' the 'phoetographers discovered, too laté, that from 'a new angle the lettering on the stone would show up and ' téll the' whole story of the event. In epite of the “cautionary” re- quest not to photograph the Presi- 'dent eating, photographers used a long range lens at Campobello and shapped Mr. Roosevelt biting humn- 'grily into a hot-dog. That “Presi- dent-bites-dog” picture didn’t pring any protests. He's still “friends” with the photo men. So is Landon. On a recent cam- paign trip he got caught short of change and borrowed a half dollar from a photographer. Thinking such a trifle soon would be for- gotten by the candidate, the pho- tographer was surprised a couple of days later when Landon called to him. Hi.
