Pegues. His re- marks were followed by a round table diseussion that lasted almost | two hours in which several pros- pective builders took up problems of interest to themselves. Mr. Pegues mentioned briefly the modernization ~ program, pointing out eligible loans under this section of the Act, and dwelt more fully on the “Single Mortgage System’ inaugurated on a nationwide scale by the Federal Housing Admin- istration. Under this system, which pro- vides for murual insurance, any- one with a moderate income, a modicum of savings and yet who have not the necessary cash im- mediately at hand, can build or buy homes which conform to cer- tain fundamental standards. With heavy rubber bo on in addition to his own heavy weight, the man was powerless to do any more than cling to the side of the boat and shout for Thelp. Although the Wehrens, nearest neighbors to Du- rant, live a quarter of a mile or more distant, they were awakened by the calls, and after enlisting the | help of Hirsch from his cabin near- by, the two men went to the rescue f the drowning man, arriving cn e scene as his endurance to heng cnto the boat was about ex- hausted. Thus commerce would be ir:proved. THEORY DOESN'T FIT? Peek said in a speech a few days ago in Philadelphia that the theory was not bad, but that it did not fit the conditions. In the first place, he asserted America is losing {her position as a creditor and “the |Administration has refrained from |making any particular effort to \collect what is due us on public land private debts.” Instead of buying American goods, Peek said, European inves- tors are buying American securities to regain a creditor relationship. He concedes he has to present a rather involved argument. Recently Hull defended his pro- gram before the Chamber of Com-~ merce of the United States and was encouraged by an indorsing resolution with a peek-like hook on it which recommended that the program be operated so as not to bring in products competing with American agriculture. = g 3 | ATTENTION, DOG OW!} Be sure that your dog carries a 1936 license tag by June 1.
