Cream of Oyster Corn Chowder CRAFT SECRETS Benjamin Thomas Bristow Arrests 64th “Hoss Stealer” SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Dec. 6. — Benjamin Thomas Bristow reckons he's “the best hoss thief catcher in these parts,” although business isn’t as brisk as it used to be. Just the other day he nailed his sixty- fourth horse stealer in the 50 years he’s been “trackin’” “There’s two things you need to be a good hoss thief catcher,” he ad- vised, with gestures. “You naturally got to know hosses. You got to work hard and make a lot of inquiries. A kid you meet along the road some- times will help more than grown- ups.” Bristow takes the measurements of the tracks of the missing animals before he hits the trail. Like Fingerprints “A hoss’s hoof prints is kinda like human fingerprints — each ope of them'’s different to a man that really knows hosses. I used to think I pus- sonally knew every hoss in these parts. Whenever a strange hoss came to town, I spotted him right away.” It was a strange “hoss,” he said, that led him to look twice at a man, woman and child who drove into Springfield years ago. At the sher- iff's office he found their pictures— “wanted.” A short time later he ar- rested them and an Iowa sheriff called to take them back to that State. “Up in Iowa a mob got 'em and hung 'em—I recollect they sent the baby to an orphians’ home. I had fig- ' gered they might be hoss thieves when I saw them come in, but it turned out they were just mur- derers.” Gets Pine Seed Crop WASHINGTON—A great pine seed crop, which occurs about every sev- en years in a cycle generations old and never explained, is reported by the Department of Agriculture as coming on in the south.
