BUILDERS TURN OUT LATEST IN SMALL VESSELS Brown Bear, Trojan and Quaker Maid Represent Best in Shipbuilding Never before in the history of Southeast Alaska have individual enterprise and federal agencies made a more determined and suc- | cessful effort to meet the indus- | trial needs of the times than dur-| ing the last 12 month period, it is revealed by H. C. Hansen, well- known Seattle naval architect, whose boats dot the northland from | the shifting channels of ice-bound rivers to the deepest outside waters. When the newly completed Brown Bear, queen of the Alaska Game Commission’s new fleet, weighed anchor in Elliot Bay, Seattle, Au- gust 8, and pointed her prow to- ward Alaska, the last of 12 new boats went into service in behalf of Alaskan industry. She is the sixth new vessel in the service of tHe Bureau of Biological Survey, De- partment of Agriculture, assigned to the North. She and her sister craft | are assigned to the fur and gamel industry of Alaska, a $5,000,000 an-| nual business that extends along 25,000 miles of shore line and cov- ers 600,000 square miles of territory. Industry Keeps Pace The Alaska-Junea: Mining Com- pany, representing another major industry of the north, has the Die- sel motored tug Trojan in service, towing barges of tailings out into the deep waters for disposal, from the prolific ore laden mine on the coast. She is doing a strenuous 24- hour a day job of building the Alaskan mining industry and is typ- ical of all that is new and best in her class of service. Designed on Coast ‘They are the first of many more similar craft to come and, in my opinion, set a standard of achieve- | ment that will bring many new de- mands upon Pacific Coast ship- builders.” The six new boats that comprise the Alaskan Game Commission fleet, the 72-foot diesel utility tug of the Alaska-Juneau Gold Mining Com- pany as well as the five craft built for Nakat Packing Corporation, were constructed on the west coast from west coast lumber and mater- ials. N. J. Bianchard Company, of Se- attle, built the smaller of the boats in the Game Commission fleet, a shallow-draft river boat, “White| Fox,” designed for service in the turbulent Alaskan rivers. Long Boat Works of Olympia, constructed the game Commission‘s trio of patrol boats, so designed that they can be drag- ged over delta shoals or used suc- cessfully in the shifting channels of the Kuskokwim, Yukon and other rivers. She is a flush-deck type ves- sel with long, raking forefoot to make her suitable for work in the Arctic ice when necessary. She was! built with PWA funds and comes| under the classification of much needed government equipment.
