Outstanding achievements of the expedition include the first crosss ing of the forbidding and danger- ous heights of the vast St. Elias mountain range on the Alaska-Yu+ |kon border and the mapping eof large areas of previpusly uncharted | territory in the St. Elias region, not | far from the famous Klondike gold | country. } Fought Blizzards and Gales | | Dr. Gilbert Grosvenor, president lof the National Geographic Society, sent the following telegram of con< gratulation to Mr. Washburn: “Heartiest congratulations to you and to every member of your cours | ageous and resourceful greup. Your { | | | suceessful accomplishment of ex+ tremely difficult explorations as |originally planned reflects greatest creait on every individual in your | party.” Almost from the moment Wash- burn and his companions arrived in the Yukon they fought adverse conditions. For weeks they sledged across great mountain masses, han- dicapped by blinding blizzards, by treacherous footing, severe cold and the threat of avalanches and ice falls, but accomplished their survey- ing and photography in spite of these difficulties. On one occasion several sledge dogs fell into a cre- vasse 70 feet deep and were res- cued with great difficulty and dan- ger by the men. ' Expedition In Danger Danger dogged the expedition even to the end. The message re- ceived today by the Society told how three of the explorers were stranded near a frozen lake when failure of the ice to break up de- layed their rescue by the expedi- tion's airplane. When finally reach- ed by rescuers their food was al- most exhausted and both men and dogs had been subsisting chiefly on a large moose which had been killed. The region explored by the expe- dition includes peaks which rank among the highest in North Amer- ica. The surveys and aerial photo- graphs made in the region are ex- (STOCK ISSUES WAVER; SOME TAKE ADVANGE —Mining Issues Exper- ience Nervousness NEW YORK, July 6-—Selective buying lifted several issues to new | highs for the year at the short session today, but profit taking, a regular week-end feature developed soft. spots elsewhere Today's close was somewhat ir-| regular.
