ELKS IMPROVE: NOT ENOUGH TO DEFEAT LEGION RESULTS YESTERDAY Legion 6, Elks 5. Good—but not gooa encugh. That is the way to be the rejuve- nated Eiks as they battled and lost 0 the Legion in last pight's second half City Baseball League apener at Baseball Park. Tt ¥ champions won, 6 to 5. Unmistakably, the last-position Elks were improved. For the first time in many a game, they had come huctle. The score itself is elo- quent evidence as to the determin- cd manpner in which the Antlers kept after the Legionnai “Rabbit” Ell! two Legion two Elks’ runs in L‘w first f"m'", However, timely hitting by Ken Junge and Joe Snow of the Legion, tied the score at 2-all before the initial inning was over. John Ko- shak was scored, after singling, on » Junge's one-base fly, and Bob Boyd # did just that thing, 8 cafe on a fielder's choice, romped home on Snow's hard double to center. Koki Obliges With two out in the Elk half of the second, Manager A. T. (Shavey) Koski strode to the plate. Someone in the grandstand shouted, “Come on, Shavey, hit a home run.” Shav- ey is a nice, obliging fellow—so he poling out a long, high ball along the left field foul line, good for four bases. But that wasn't enough to keep the Antlers ahead. For, in their half of the second, the Legionnaire bounced into the lead, 4-3, when some poor Elk infie \\mk bined with Koshak’s cf the day fer two tallies The Legion didn't stop there. In Z the third, Boyd rammed a ball out to right for a triple. He came home on Ev Nowell's high fly to left. Ir the fifth, the winners counted their final run on Boyd's second long hit of the day, a home run into cen field. This was Boyd's second cir- cuit ply of the season Rabbit Races However, the Elks went down fighting, with one ¢“Rabbit” EIl- linsburg leading the fight. In the fifth, Rabbit was safe on an in- field error. He stole second. He stole third. Jimmy Orme punc. a sin- gle to rizht, and in came the Rab- bit. in the seventh and last frame, Rabbit was just as effective. He was safe on first after pumping clow one past second. He stclk ond. He stole third, and, in trying to catch the best base-runner in the league, the Legionnaires lost the ball. Ellinsburg raced home for the Elks’ final run on an er ‘Ward McAlister again pitched a steady game for the winners. Last night's victory marked McAlister's fifth win in as many starts. He whiffed five and allowed but five hits. The Elks showed some changes. Abbie Garn made his return to the fold, and the colorful, peppery play- er promptly was put in as catch- er, with young Ted Adams, a re- cruit, doing a nice job at short- stop.
