AS CAOLUMBLS - - SNUERY -=- Mflfl&E CLIMB T0 FIRST $POT TIE WITH WIN N Black Sox Trim Legion, 5| to 4, by Garrison Fin- ish Last nght RESULTS Es;nbu Mgeoa:s 5, ° ‘When Pinch~runner Russell raced hcme fram third base with the Hn Befc winning score after Stan Grummett had hoisted a long fly to left field last night, he boosted the Moose up to a tie with the Legion for first place in the City Baseball League. The Moose defeated the Legion in a Garrison finish, 5 to 4. The gcore was tied at, 4-all going inta the last half of the seventh and gathering darkness was pre- venting a prolongation .into the eighth. Pete Nello had been hit on the head by & pitched. ball and | Russell had gone in to run for him. The latter was shoved to second when Legion Pitcher Ken Junge walked Moose Pitcher Dave Turner, The bases became loaded as Fred Schmitz also drew a free pass. Then came Grummett’s fly which broke up the ball game. Two Pitchers Retire Hitting rallies combined with Joose fielding found both starting pltchers retiring from the mound half way through the contest. After three scoreless innings, the Legion- naires started what seemed, at the time, like a winning rally by scor- ing four, runs and drivinz Jimmy Manning to cover. j Ev Nowell's single was followed by Bob -Boyd's mighty home run over the centor field fence, But, as if that wasn't enough damage, Shortstop Claude Er:skine, who us- ually puts up a dependable game, fell down with a loud clatter and committed three errors. Thes2 bck: bles, combined with Tal one-base blow, speliad two more| tallies. But, in the fifth, the Black Sox| got busy and started an impressive rally that fizzled out with but one three. men left stranded on bases. The lone tally was counted by Fred Schmitz, who had sinzgled, scoring on Walt An- drew’s poke to right. Fun Starts However, the fun came in the next frame. Ward McAllister, Leg- ion chucker, had been fooling *the Moose with well-placed pitches. But in the sixth he tired. Before being replaced, he threw 20 pitches, 16 of which were balls. The others were either strikes or singles by Fred Schmitz and E:rskine. An out- field errdr here also added to the debacle and before Manager George Henry could yank McAllister, the damage, in the terms of the tying three runs, spikeq the mhfiq set the stage for the seventh-inning final score. Hitting features 9[ the struggle, outside of Boyd's circuit clout, were limited to Fred Schmitz two for three and Erskmqp. thyee for’ four stick work. Schmitg further added to his laurels by exeeuting a nifty slide at home plate in that sixth- inning rally. & The summary: LEGION— Koshak, If . Snow, 1b Newell, ef Boyd, € ...
