COAST SEAMEN | GET PAY BOOST, WORK TIME CUT Board of Arbltratlon, Ap- pointed Last Summer, Makes SAN FRANCISCO, April 12.—In- t creases in wages and reductions of working hours for 9,000 seamen on Pacific coastwise ocean going pas- nger and freight vessels were pro- vided here today when the award of the Board of Arbitration, which was named following last sum- mer's marine strike, was made pub- lic. The award, which Board mem- bers estimated would increase the total payroll of seamen approxi- mately $100,000 a month, provides for overtime payments and a new system of rules for improved work- ing conditions. Set Until October f The award 1s etfective until Sep- | tember 30 of this year. It will be renewed automatically unless either ! side gives notice it is not satisfied! with the agreement. It does not affect the pre;ent coastwise oil tanker strike. The award raises the pay of able- bodies seamen from $50 to $63.50 a month; ordinary seamen, $35 $45; boatswalns and carpenters, $60 to $75; firemen, $37.50 to $50; oil- ers and watertenders, $60 to $72.505 messman and waiters, $40 to $50.; Cook Wages Vary | The wages of cooks and chefs under the award range from $75 to $275 a month, depending upon the class of vessel.
