SENATE PASSES MURRAY'S CLAM, FISH TRAP BILLS Tables with Sparing Com-| ment House Offer to Pay Sitka Trip Two House proposals and a Sen- ate memorial were passed by the Territorial Senate at its ssssion. this afternoon. The Murray mem 1 to Cong: asking amendment to the fisheries regulations to elimin- ate floating and standing fish traps met approval -as did the Murray hill providing for a tax on com- mhercial clam diggers. Both meas- ures had previously passed the House. The Brunelle memorial asking $200,000 be appropriated by Con- gress for paying the Territory for educating Indians and Eskimos also met favor. It now goes to the House A license fce of 21 a for | resident clam diggers and $25 an- nually for non-residents is provided | for in the Murray bill which also | requires that the buyers of such at food markets and canneries pay the license fees of the diggers With sparing comment, the Sen- ate tabled' the communication from the House offering to pay the Senators’ expenses on a proposed trip to the Pioneers’ Home at Sitka this coming week end. The offer of the House came after the Sen- ate had killed previously a measure asking the appropriation of $500 from Territorial funds to meet costs of the jaunt to Sitka. A new bill was introduced, by Powers, giving courts right to re- ject names of persons drawn for Jury service when it might entail large and unnecessary expensc to bring the jurors from long dis- tances. -, RETURNS A prominent business and civic leader of Ketchikan M. J. (Mike) Heneghan is returning to that city on the Northwestern. A former mayor of the First City and in- terested in fishing and allied in- dustries, Mr, Heneghan has been in Juneau for several days during the current session of the Terri- torial Legislature. B CATHOLIC SISTER ARRIVES Sister Mary Martin of Tours, the Sister Superior of Pius X Mission at Skagway, was an inbound pas- senger this morning when the Northwestern docked here. Ross of the thirtieth infantry in what companion officers said was a fight. Wilson. Included among the First City delegates are: Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Hansen, Heinie Henning, Mr. and |Mrs. Ralph Ohman, Ed Kerr,| Fritz Williams, Fred Moeser, and Mrs, Agnes Reinart. In addition to this number, the following came as members of the crew, P. J. Jenkins, captain; Sam Bartholomew, mate; and Dave Jenkins, engineer. The Ketchikan delegation an- nounced a two-fold program which it will support in the convention. First, the First City pioneers would petition the Territorial Legislature, by memorial, not to pass any bills which would restrict or ham- per present industries now employ- ing large numbers of men. Second, they would favor any )egislativzl‘ action which will induce new in- dustries to come to the Territory. Many of the delegates plan to remain aboard the Thomas E. Knoth, aged 64, wealthy Cali-| fornia and Alaska land owner, who died last Monday night, will go to the Orthopedic Hospital for Children in Los Angeles, with the exception of minor bequests. Friends said the property has not been evaluated but it is ex- pected it will run into the hun- dreds of thousands of dollars.
