DAN'L--YOUR UNCLE SNUFFY'S LIFE WON'T BE WORTH A ‘PLUGGED DIME IF YOU DON'T GET TO. SCRAM .OUT. O' THESE MILLS --THERE'S THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, SATURDAY, FEB. 9, 1935. AW, SHUC] EF _UNC SNUFFEY AUNTY LOWIZIE MYy WEDDIN'. HiM A WHOLE ARMY OF HILL-BILLIES COWN IN TH' HOOP TITLE AS GHAMPS BEATE Fraternal Five T,akes Over-| time ' Thriller from George Brothers CITY LEAGUE DeMelay Krause Conc. Juneau Fire. George Bros. Pouglas Fire Moese High School RESULTS LAST NlGH’I‘ Krause Concreters 33, Doug- las Firemen 26. BeMolay 35, George Brothers 33 (overtime). Trimming the first half George Brothers team in a pousing over- time battle at Juneau High School last night by a 35-33 count, the DeMolay quintet, today, is well on its way to repeating City Basket- ball ‘League history of last year. In the 1933-34 season the George five ‘won the first half title, only to be knocked out of the second half- championship by a defeat at the hands of the DeMolays. Of course, the George team went on to garner the league crown in the playoff—but things haven't reach- ed that stage yet this year. Right now, the DeMolays sit se- renely atop the City League pile with four victories in as starts. Between them and a second half title lie two games, one with Juneau High School and one with -the Juneau Firemen, The Krause Concreters stepped info second place last night with 4 a thrilling win over a stubborn "Douglas Firemen squad, 33 to 26. . Y But it was the DeMolay victory sthat ‘had a goodly~sized crowd on its feet most of the way. Starting slowly, tne tired De- ‘Molay—still feeling the effects of that 44-42 close call given them by the Douglas Firemen Wednes- day—trailed the champions at the girst quarter, 7 to 9. But, &hnmgh g wonderful exhibition .of floor | work and team play, they swept ¢into an 18-12 lead at half time, and, although hard pressed, had a | 27-21 advantage going into .the announcement, that.the University Miss Taylor £inal period. «Then it was that those two ml- wart guards for the George Broth- er quintet—Claude . Erskine and Art Burke—went into action. Twice, this combination worked to perfec- dion, with Erskine dumping in ® gelling points. Finally, with thne minutes to play, McPhee bagged a shert . basket from the foul circle ‘to knat the tally at 31-all. A minute lnter, little - Elmer | Lindstrom, .who played a;. great game for the winners, heayed one in from his own territory, the ball foing half the distance of fhe floor. Seconds . later, Bob Dfl“n; George forward, picked, up . the casaba after a tie-ball. toss-up.to -#ie the count at 33:all. Two minjtes of play failed to break this and ‘Timekeeper Alex Dugham’s final :gun found the count gwen at ;83 to 33. Play in the overtime period was | Arantic. However Hilding Haglund's foeautiful side shot, after breaking up a George Brothers' advance in 7 mid-floor, was the only score, and | ;the DeMolays waltzed off with & 35-33 win. ¥ Besides Lindstrom, Al , Bloom- «uist, who bagged three nifty field 1goals in the last half, played well «dor the DeMolays.
