A few days after Henry J. Ben- dinger, new owner of the Milwau- kee Brewers, bought the club from the Browns, the Brewers made Gray a free agent. A week later Gray was taken to St. Mary’s Hos- pital here for an emergency opera- tion. Although the player was no longer his property, Bendinger has for several weeks paid not only Gray’s hospital and doctor bills, but also provided funds for Mrs. Gray and son Dick, 11. RIGHT - HANDED SWINGERS BEST AGAINST LEFTIES DETROIT, Sept. 10.—Here’s a lit- tle ammunition for those baseball fans who espouse the theory that' right-handed hitters have better success against left-handed pitch- ers than batters who swing from the south side of the plate, and vice versa: 1 In a game here which the Tigers won from' the Washington Sen- ators, 4 to 3, Detroit made éight hits off the southpaw slants of Wally Stewart—and seven of the eight blows were struck by right- handed swingers. Greenberg, Qwen and Rogell got two apiece and Fox one. { Charley Gehringer was the only' Detroiter who nicked Stewart while ! swinging from the first-base side. — e SPECIAL DELIVERY New Phone—442.
