C. The motorship Zapora, of the V. Westerlund, commflndgr. and Wills Navigation Company, Capt. D. P. Doran, purser, arrived in Hugh McDonald, master,’and Har- | Juneau at 3 o'clock Saturday af- ternoon from Tacoma, and sailed at midnight for Skagway. | The Alaska had 27 passengers aboard for Juneau, 66 Yukon Cir- 'cle tourists, and 151 round trip- pers, besides several for Skagway, Haines, Sitka and Tenakee. Part of the large general cargo of freight was a shipment of 75 tons of meat, which included many orders billed on the Yukon, but turned back on account of space shortage. . Passengers for Juneau from ’mcoma were I, G. Anderson, Jos- ephine Crawford, Miss E. Grant, William Hugart, Ida Isaacson, Del- ma Isaacson, E. Jackson, A. Mar- tinville, A. Ross, A. K. Smith and and R. Verda. Locals were C. Baker, O. Moore, Mrs. J. H. Ar- mour, Willa Armour, C. R. Harri- son, M. 8. Whittier, J. L. Kascka, | C. T. Gardner, C. Wright, C. John- son, J. L. Johns, A. McAlister, old Mattson, purser, docked .at the Juneau Commerecial dock yesterday morning at 10:30 o'clock, with a good cargo of general merchandise and lumber. She unloaded oil at the Union Oil Company dock before coming into the harbor. Passengers from Tacoma were Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Peterson and children, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Felitz. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Rod- land were passengers in from Hoonah. Scme little difficulty was ex- perienced in getting the cargo un- loaded. Local union longshoremen , chjected to the use of seamen in the hold of the vesesl, for which the Zapora had permission from the International Longshoremen's Association, due to the lack of skilled labor at many of her ports of call. However, rather than have any trouble, the ship agreed to put four union longshoremen into the hold and hired union men on the dock to handle the cargo. The seamen who had been doing the work received full over-time pay for their efforts previously and turned half of it over to the fund for the care of the longshore- men’s families on the coast, as well as the $15 per month which they are each donating to the fund from their regular pay. Some criticism was expressed by members of the crew when they late found that the local union has no affiliation with the I. L. A.
