THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE TUESDAY JUNE 26, 1934. BARNEY GOOGLE AND SPARK PLUG _ YOU === XR KK === COME BACK HERE — von._lr BELONG |~ This is the first of a series of six daily articles picturing conditions 20 years after June 28, 1914, when the shot that started the World War was fired. L SARAJEVO, Yugoslavia, June 26. —Banners fluttered gaily in Sara- | jevo 20 years ago June 28. It was “Vidovdan,” known to the Serbs. This year the counterpart of erica’s Fourth of July and ‘Memorial - Day is expected to be celebrated with restraint, for Eu- rope harbors bitter memories of that 1914 heliday when an assassin killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand the greatest holiday R A 19 - year-cld assassin put Sarajeve into screaming head- lines when he killed the Arch- duke of Austria in 1914. That event touched off a fuel-soaked Eurcpe . . . war fcllowed. Sara- jevo is quieter today but the place where the assassination occurred (arrow indicates spot) ‘ is still printed out. The sketch ‘ shews an artists’ conception of | the Kkilling. | | in Sarajevo and touched off the World War. Then Sarajevo — pronounced | “Sah-Rah’-yay-vo” was the seat {of the Bosnian diet under Austro- Hungarian administration. Today it is the capital of Bosnia, which| united with Serbia and other| Slavic districts to form in 1918 the ; xingdom now known as Yukoclavia. | Killing In Fcurteenth Century “Vidovdan,” « by 1914, nad ab- sorbed all the patriotic fever of| the Serbs. On that day in 1389, when Serbia | was being attacked by the 'I‘urks.! a Serbian prince slipped through T THERE YOU ARE, MY BULSY WuLSY - AH,AH - NOW BEHAVE YOURSELF --- LOOKIT HIM NOW, BARNEY JUS LIKE A LAMB — I HATE THE THOWGHT OF FIGHTIN/ HIM — LITTLE BULSY = WULSY == | the Turkish lines, offered’ his ser- vices to Sultan Murad—and, when he gained admittance to the Turk, stabbed him to death. It has been said that the Bos— | ntan schoolboy who shot Franz | Ferdinand was guided in part by the legend which grew up from the Turk's assassination. An equally significant, if less dramatic, Vidovdan was the one 15 years ago when the treaties ending the World War were signed. They gave Serbia’s successor—Yugoslavi —new territory many times its own size and permitted it to ab- sorb a population twice as large as Serbia’s. Cathedral Services This year there will be services for fallen Serbian heroes in the Serbian Orthodox cathedral in Bel- grade, and all other churches in the land'will hold similar services. The King may speed to the Bel- grade cathedral in one of his Am- erican ecars;, or he may attend ser- vices at the private chapel of his summer palace in Dedinje. In Srajevo there will be special Vidovdan drills by the “Sokols”, gymnastic organization, ‘Whatever the cele Franz Perdinand’s assassination and of the World War's real be- ginning. Twe Attempts On Life The chduke, nephew of Em- | peror Franz Joseph and heir to his throne, rode along a street with his wife. Sarajevo He was there to inspect the troops and as he : motored from the maneuvers to luncheon in the city, a bomb was hurled at his car. It fell short wounding an officer. The cortege moved on. Less than an hour later, as the archduke’s car backed out of a narrow street, 19-year-old Gavrilo Princep fired twice with deadly ac- curacy.
