Forest Service during the year of its operation in Alaska, ac- cording to information obtain: from Wellman Holbrook, Acting As- sistant Regional Forester. | These trails have been construct- | ed for a variety of purposes, some | to opan up mineralized districts, otherwise inaccessible, one to a set- tlement impossible to reach other-| wise during the winter months, some for the pleasure of sports- men and others for hikers. For the convenience of those who may w to use the trails, Mr. has given out a detailed de ription of where they begin and to where they. lead. Outstanding Accomplishment From a recreational standpoint, the outstanding accomplishment by the ECW crews during the last year | has been the construction of a trail em connecting Hasselborg, Bea- ver, Alexander, Shiels, Distin, Da idson and Thayer lakes on Admir- alty Island. In this project, which| opens up many new fields for the| sportsmen, 29 miles of trail were built and 4 substantial shelter cab- ins constructed. Entrance to this chain of lakes can be made from three poin Mole Harbor, 2.5 miles to Lake Al- exander; Windfall Harbor 8 miles| to the north end of Hasselborg Lake; Mitchell Bay 4 miles to Dav- | idson Lake The Forest Service now has a| crew of ECW men going over these | trails and fixing up the weak plac- es that always show up on newly | constructed trails, Mr. Holbrook de- | clared. It is planned to construct two or three more shelter cabins ab strategzic points and place row boats on each lake so that each one can be visited without carry- ing a boat across the portages. For distribution to persons @ésiring to visit this most interesting place, the Forest Service is having blue prints made showing the location of the trails and shelter cabins.
