It was intense and lasted practically the entire month. As a result, the water at' the head of our intake ditch, at the source ~ jtself, built up ice to such an ex- { tent’ that the flowing water was { shut off from the ditch and flow- ! ed 411 around it down the moun- , tain. The water in the pipes at different points froze as soon as { the water pressure or flowage ¢ ceased. At the first sign of trou- *“ple, we had men working on the r’lntaka. and it was only after some ! time and considerable labor that | we were able to free the intake { and’ the frozen pipes of the sys- tem. The supply of water at the ? source during December never | ceased to be ample for all our needs; but tne collar of ice shut- ting off the water from the ditch,; and the consequent frozen pipes i on the lower levels, could mot be remedied in a 'day. The water ! supply, however, as just stated, was elways ample, and continued | so throughout the winter. + “We propose to overcome our and | | allowing the water to maintain at |all times its normal temperature | 'an’d flow. The wood pipe on the | mountainside will also be protect- ed with the additional covering. “Within the City, local difficul- ties will be rectified. Among other| things, @ new iron main will be installed on Sixth Street between Nelson and Kennedy Streets. All improvements will be made during the coming summer.” During the a:scussion of the wa-| ter situation at the Council meet- ing it was alleged that the fran- chise given to the Nelson Water Company in November, 1931, was illegal as it was not submitted to the voters for approval, and the customary 30 days’ notice was nol given. The Councilmen decided to draw up a new franchise for the Nelson Water Company to be sub- mitted to the voters at the regu- lar election next year, which will properly safeguard the interests of the consumers. Because of this fact, the matter of revoking the Nelson franchise will not be sub- mitted to the voters at the elec- tion next month. | The question of revoking the | franchise of the Juneau Water { Company, it was decided, will be submitted to the ecitizens at the| forthcoming election, but in af form that will give the water com- |pany an opportunity to make the changes and improvements recom- rynded by the Citizens' Commit- |tee, and leave to the discretion of |the Council whether or not the {company has met its obligations {to an extent that would not war- 'rant revoking the franchise. { Mayor I Goldstein expressed the opinion, based on a conference he has had with John Reck, man- ager of the company, that the Ju- neau Water Company would agree to remedy the situation this sum- mer. —— e WOMEN’'S ATHLETIC CLUB There will be a business and {Social meeting of this club Monday |afteroon, 1:30 o'clock.
