John, Ethel and Lionel Barrymore, in their first appear- a triumphant triumverate Ras- putin and « the. Empress,” super- spectacle of the fall of the Ro- manoffs, opening tomorrow at the Capitol = Theatre. No better vehicle could been chosen than the dramatic story of the last days of the Ro- manoff dynasty, colorful as a per- jod play, yet so modern that it is within the memory of this gen- eration. One sees Rasputin in his maze of intrigues, orgies, hyp- notic spells and duplicity, and while it seems inconceivable, re- members these self-same things were the topic of the newspapers. Fine Character Work The Barrymores bring the characters to virtual life. John is a brilliant figure as the debonair Prince Chegodieff. Ethel Barry- more offers a stirring picture of the ill-fated Empress. 'The role was reality to her—the Russian Empress was her friend — and hence she plays it with a depth of understanding and knowledge that at once stamps the perform- ance as far beyond a mere piece of acting. Lionel Barrymore, as the sinister “Holy Devil” in make- up that seems to be almost his reincarnation, was never more com- pelling. Distinguished work is al- so done by Ralph Morgan, as the Czar; Diana Wnyward, as Prin- cess Natasha; Tad Alexander as the Czarevitch; €. Henry Gordon and Edward Arnold. Slightly fictionized, ‘“Rasputin |and the Empress” isa literal glance at the ftcors which plunged Rus- sia into war and revolt. Tt is staged on a scale more lavish than anything heretofore attempted in talking pictures, with its great throneroom sequence, the impres- sive and spectacular ceremony in ! the Kremlin, the huge review of the troops and other authentic reproductions of the glories that were St. Petersburg before it was | swept by the red fide of revolu- { tion, JAVA JUNGLES ————————— ARE SETTING OF JACK HOLT PLAY [ When Slrangers Marry” First Featured Part for English Actress Lilian ‘Bond, fiery-headed En- glish actress, plays her first lead- ing role opposite Fack Holl inj “When Strangers Marry,” Colum- bia's dramatic picture, showing at the Coliseum Theatre.
