Here is a .good melodrama distinguished by three stellar performances, by Miss Bankhead, Gary Cooper and 1 Charles Laughton, which should be placed high on the screen’s role of honor. Under the dirsction of Marion Gering, the film begins in a north African seaport, and moves swift- ly through growing dramatic ac- tion to a terrific climax, aboard a sinking submarine. The story, ) an adaptation of & novel by Mau- rice Larrony called “Sirens and Tritons,” follows the strange ma- chinations of a submarine com- mander’s insane jealousy of his young wife, which led to near- | tragedy when the man goes com- pletely mad and attempts to wreck the submarine with himself and [his wife’s lover aboard. | Miss Bankhead is glamorously | beautiful 'in the role of Pauline Sturm, the wife, and gives by far the best performance of her screen M:axeer Gary Cooper, in his first | role since his extended trip abroad, |is responsible for a fine portrayal jof the young lieutenant who loves | the wife of his commander. ' But the outstanding perform- lance of the film is contributed |by Charles Laughton, an English actor, whose unforgettable portrait of the crazed submarine command- er is his first screen creation. Laughton’s work in this exceed- ingly difficult role places him in the front rank of screen charactor | actors. | [HANS BERG ‘RECEIVES FORD V-8 DUMP TRUCK A new Ford V-8 dump truck was received’ on the Alaska yesterday and delivered to Hans Berg.
