SEASON CLOSES IN AREA THREE ON OCTOBER 26 International Fisheries Commission to Close Last Area Then Halibut fishing 'in the north, Pacific ‘Ocean waters will close down completely in one month, ac- | cording to official advices received here foday. A telegram received from the International Fisheries Commission said that area num-, ber three, from Cape Spencer north and west would be closed down on October 26. | The area north to Cape Spencer was closed down on August 25,: when its seasonal limit was ex- hausted. The closing of Area three will | have bui liftle effect upon local fishermen who, due to their small' crai., are unable to fish in the open waters of the d:ep sea banks to the west. The Commission es- timates that the limit of 24,300,000 ; pounds will be reached on the date fixed for olosing. Skipper Confident of Making Bering Sea With 100,000 feet of lumber ta- ken on at the Juneau Lumber Mills aboard from here, in addi- tion to other supplies and equip- ment brought up from the south, the motorship Boxer, supply ship of thz Bureau of Education, left Gastineau Channel this morning at 4 o'clock. The motorsuic, under the com- mand of Capt. James R. Craw- ford, veteran Arctic skipper, will make all possible speed to Beringl Strait ports to unload the cargo and leave the far northern wa- ters in advance of the winter ice. This-is the latest date, as far as is known, for a government ves- to leave southern waters for the Arctic, but Capt. Crawford is confident he will make it and surprise shippers and steamship men who expressed skepticism as to its possibility. To Construct Scheols The cargo aboard the Boxer will be used in the construction of various school houses in the far north recently approved by the department in Washington, D. C., and includes materials which could not be obtained in Alaska. Passengers aboard the Boxer, who will be eye witnesses to the interesting race include several teachers for the Bureau of Edu- cation schools and carpenters who will be engaged in the sthool con- struction work. They are, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Connelly, of Indiana, on their way to teach in Kulukak; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Stevenson of Denver, Colorado, who will teach at Togiak, Mr. and Mrs. M. L.
