Fish reached the creeks in abundant quantities and the water conditions were as good as could be desired for them to as- cend. Planes Prove Value The results from the use of air- planes in fisheries patrols and surveys this summer proved the correctness of Commissioner Frank T. Bell's contention that planes offer the most efficient ‘and ef- fective method of patrol, asserted Mr. Wingard. They were inval- uable for accumulating up to the minute information on run con- ditions and other factors of vital importance not only to the Bureau of Fisheries for its conservation program but on the whole pack- ing and fishing industry. Members of the Bureau, includ- ing Mr. Wingard, spent 50 hours in the air, covering particularly areas in which extensions had been requested. Had it been necessary to inspect all of these areas by small boat, and such inspections are required before extensions can be authorized, it would have been impossible to get a real picture of the run conditions. Several days would have been required for the boats to cover ‘the areas and by the time the surveys were finished, the data would have been old. Planes Work Well However, by using the planes it was possible to cover an entire district in a few hours. A dis- triet could be, and some of them were, covered two or three times a day or so before the regular seasons expired and recommenda- tions for extensions were made as the basis of conditions actually existing just before the regular closing dates. Commissioner Bell, Mr. Wingard sald, has expressed the desire to get at least one plane and hopes to be able to obtain funds for two from the Bureau of Budget. 1f two are authorized, one of them will be maintained in Southeast Alaska and the other will cover the remainder of the fishing dis= tricts outside of the Panhandle. GROCERY “The Store That Pleases” CONCENTRATES DROP INTO THE CHANNEL FRIDAY \ | ‘: Concentrates, whose value was estimated at between $10,000 and $12,000, fell into the water under the Alaska Juneau Mining Com- pany dock yesterday afternoon when a small portion of the dock collapsed under the weight. The concentrates were packed into bags ready for shipment and stacked on the dock when the ac- cident occurred, dropping them in- to the Channel Today, A. J. LaGassa, profes- sional diver, is working on the job and it is expected that all, or practically all of the ore will be recovered, according to L. H. Cole, will re- sume operations in this district Sunday when it sails for Stephens Passage and Prederick Sound points. Capt.
